PUTNAM — The presumed oldest resident of Putnam is celebrating her 106th birthday at Matulaitis Nursing Home on April 1. This is no April Fools’ Day joke!
Mrs. Danute Lipciute Augius grew up in Lithuania. Hailing from a literary family, Danute studied French linguistics in Lithuania as well as in Paris, wrote, and taught. Together with her husband and children, Danute had to rebuild her life in the U.S. as a WWWII refugee.
After the death of her artist husband, Danute spent numerous years working at Loyola University in Illinois. After retirement in 1985, Danute came to Putnam to be an associate of the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, where she continued to share her literary talents. Her faith was and is central in Danute’s life.
