Planning the next park

PUTNAM — A closing on a new tiny pocket park is expected “shortly,” according to Mayor Barney Seney.
The strip of land measures only 2,368 square feet and runs between the former Chickering Café and the railroad tracks, on Union Square downtown. Town residents OK’d the purchase from the owners of the Saw Dust Coffee House and Dessert Bar II.
However, according to Seney, the town is acquiring the strip of land as a donation. The town has agreed to cover all the expenses including the appraisal, survey and attorney’s fees. As a thank you, the town will install a bench and a plaque for Saw Dust’s gift.
Seney said, “We will have the Economic Development Commission have a look at it and see what they think.” The town plans to develop plans that fit everyone’s needs, he added.
Plans may include stamped concrete, some round picnic tables, plantings and period lighting. Seney said the lights will be “very bright LEDs.”
Economic Development Director Mary Ann Chinatti said the stairs leading up to the parcel from Front Street will be incorporated into the plans. She said the plans will have to take into account how small the parcel is. Once the town knows that would be best there, a landscape architect and engineer will be hired to make the plans a reality.
Seney said he believes the town can get it done in the next couple years. He said he is happy that the revitalization of Putnam continues. “We have the pocket parks, the murals the Veterans Park and much more,” he said. “It’s all coming together.”
