Putnam's girls basketball team continues its winning ways finishing the week with a 9-4 overall record and a 6-2 record in the ECC Small Division.
Putnam 38 / Wheeler 19
Jan. 22 the Putnam girls' basketball team played at Wheeler High School and won 38-19. The Clippers were led by Katelyn Tarr with 18 points and Kate Montgomery with 12 points and 6 rebounds. Putnam led from start to finish. Halftime score 18-6. Regan Guillot chipped in with 6 points and five assists.
Woodstock 38 / Putnam 22
Woodstock’s Veronica Norman led the scoring with 11 points, Cori Bailey and Justina Thoma each had 10. Freshman Lindsay Weigand had a strong game on the boards and played good defense on Montgomery, Putnam’s inside threat, said Woodstock coach David Walley. The girls jumped out to a 14-0 lead after one quarter and was able to control the game the rest of the way. Tatum Fahs did an outstanding job on Putnam star Katelynn Tarr, holding her to one point in the second half. Walley added, “That was a big win for us. Putnam is a quality opponent and Katelynn is a proven scorer. We made the decision to do everything we could to prevent her from touching the ball and it paid off for us.”
Woodstock 38 / Suffield 44
Veronica Norman led the Acads in scoring with 12 points. Walley said, “We played well early leading 17-8 at the quarter and 22-18 at half. We struggled with our half court offense in the 4th and were outscored 15-6. Suffield is a tough team and had just come off a solid win against Ellington. We outplayed them for three quarters and just ran out of gas. We had no legs in the fourth and made some poor decisions offensively. I cannot fault the effort, I think the girls gave everything they had.”
Montville 40 / Woodstock 29
Walley said “Again the girls gave a good effort, but came up short. Montville came into the game with a 9-6 record and we knew they would play very hard.” Montville’s strong scorer, Stephanie Jones, scored 20 points earlier in the week and scored 11 against the Acads.
Danielle Autencio had 12 and Rebecca Bigelow had 11. “Although our foul shooting was improved (11 of 15), we missed several layups which was costly,” Walley said. Jessica Cornman Homonoff had 7 points, Justina Thoma had 6, and Cori Bailey and Veronica Norman each had 5.

Hyde 24 / St. Andrews 26
Hyde lost a heart breaker in overtime to St. Andrews Jan. 23. Again the wolf pack got off to a slow start and did not score for the first five minutes of the game. They also let their guard down on defense allowing two quick three pointers from the same spot. St. Andrews, on the other hand, was hot early. Gradually behind a three pointer by Becca Katz ‘12 and senior Haruka Koda’s 4 points the team caught up. There was also a tightening of the belt on defense. Hyde went into halftime behind by one point. The team played better in the second half behind the stellar three point shooting of senior Margaret Ann Regnery. They turned the ball over too many times after securing rebounds on defense and St. Andrew’s press bothered the ball handlers to a degree, however, the game remained close. Margaret Ann hit a three pointer with 10 seconds left to tie the game in regulation and send it into overtime. The overtime period belonged to St. Andrews and Hyde did not answer the call. Hyde needs more calm leadership on the floor in tough situations. The team’s next game is against Falmouth Academy on Wednesday. Scoring is as follows; Margaret Ann Regnery ‘10 - 11 points, Haruka Koda ‘10 - 6 points, Becca Katz ‘12 - 3 points, Sabrina Padro ‘10 - 2 points, and Lexi Burke ‘10 - 2 points.
Wolfpack 32 / Williams 39
Hyde faced off against Williams in a league game Jan. 20. Unfortunately, the girls came out lacking energy and not quite clicking offensively. The team did not score until nine minutes into the first half. Williams did a good job on the offensive and defensive boards which also hurt the team’s chances of possessing the ball. Hyde went into halftime down by fourteen points. Several points were talked about during halftime the most important being to keep fighting and never give up. Behind the efforts of Courtney Gill ’10, who played an awesome defensive game only allowing their high scorer to 4 points in the second half, and senior Allie Dubinsky’s ability to box out under the basket. Sabrina Padro ’10 also picked up her game defensively which led to some easy lay-ups. With six minutes to go the team fought back to within two points but that was as close as Hyde would get. Williams made some key baskets down the stretch that the wolf pack did not answer. They proved to themselves that they could work together and fight back which will help them later in the season. Sabrina Padro led all scorers with 15 points and some impressive defensive stops. Margaret Ann Regnery ’10 also had a hand in stopping their top scorer and added 7 points to the bottom line. Lexi Burke ‘10 battled all day under the boards and had 6 points. Haruka Koda ‘10 had four points in the first half. But it was the efforts of Courtney Gill ‘10 and Allie Dubinsky ‘10 that made an impression.
