The Clipper’s ended 5 and 15 for the season and only lost five of those 15 games by 6 or fewer points.
Coach Shawn Deary looked back at the season and looked ahead to next year.
“ We were in games this year and we learned some tough lessons that I hope the kids can take with them,” said Deary. “The change from last season to this season was huge. I think there was a noticeable difference in the defensive play and the intensity level in the gym as a whole. I was thrilled to have the Z Crew back on board and it was nice to have an increase in the number of fans that came out to show their support. It was one of my personal goals, to fill the gym, and I think we accomplished that.” Although, the Clippers were a very defensive minded team, they struggled a bit to find a consistent scorer.
The Clippers are graduating five seniors this year: Korbin Key, who plans to attend college, Peter Sabourin plans to major in engineering, Matt Daigneault plans to attend college for physical therapy, Douglas Henry is planning on Pre Med, and John Abreu is planning a career in broadcasting. “With the grades and the drive that these boys have, I think that they will go far and succeed in life”, said Deary, “I will be sad to see them go and I will miss them greatly.”
Next year, Putnam is moving to the CSC, (Constitution State Conference). “It is unknown to me how this move will impact our season”, said Deary, “but we are looking forward to the new experience and welcome the challenge.” Returning to the Clippers will be this year's starters Shane Herlihy and Ryan Gunter who was only able to play 11 games this season due to a knee injury. Also joining the varsity team as seniors will be Victor De Aza Ortiz and Norman Henry. There are several others able to see some quality, varsity minutes moving up from the JV level. The Clippers are looking to improve on the offensive side with outside shooting and some big men moves and rebounds. “I think we put a staple in our program with the man-to-man defense this year but I am looking to expand into some more defensive sets next year,” said Deary.
According to Deary, “ I couldn’t be more proud of the Putnam Clipper boys' basketball team this year. I would like to thank the administration for giving me the opportunity and I would like to thank my boys and my coaching staff for their hard work and dedication. A big thanks to Mo Coderre for your 15 years with Putnam basketball and to our loyal fans. We look forward to having you all with us in the gym next year”.
