new vice president
PUTNAM --- Robert E. Smanik, president and CEO of Day Kimball Healthcare, announced that Carol Howland, RN, MSN, CAN, BC, has been hired as the organization’s vice president of patient services. In this leadership role, Howland joins three other vice presidents in the formulation of Day Kimball’s short- and long-term strategic goals.
Serving as the chief nursing officer as well as the operations officer for ancillary services such as diagnostic imaging, pharmacy and nutrition among others, Howland will also act as a consultant for upcoming information technology projects. Using her analytical skills, Howland will work to improve department systems and teams, look for efficiencies and examine quality processes, all while keeping patient care in the forefront.
Smanik said, “It is my pleasure to welcome this highly-skilled and talented individual to our administration team. Carol’s vast experience in nursing and healthcare operations will be a true asset to Day Kimball Healthcare. Her passion for patient care process improvement and empowering employees is imperative to our organization’s mission.”

Howland was most recently the Associate Chief Nursing Officer at MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham, Mass. She holds bachelor degrees from the University of Rhode Island in nursing and biology and a master's in nursing from the University of Pennsylvania. Howland brings more than 27 years of progressive nursing experience, including key management positions, from a number of hospitals. She began her career as a staff nurse before assuming supervisory and managerial roles including nursing director of critical care, administrative nursing director of quality and performance improvement, and nursing informatics. For over two years, Howland has also been teaching leadership as an adjunct professor for Chamberlain University’s online nursing program.
In her spare time, Howland is an active volunteer with the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association and the March of Dimes, and enjoys traveling and photography. She currently lives in Shrewsbury, Mass., with her husband and two children.
