Varsity Baseball
Pomfret 6 Kingswood 4
The varsity baseball team headed to Kingswood April 26. The skies were threatening all day and the drizzle began as soon as the first pitch was delivered. Kingswood got on the board in the bottom of the first with three runs on two doubles and a single. Pomfret responded in the second with a run from Dan Gagnon on a sacrifice by Will Hatch. Connor Quinn was on the mound for his first start of the season and did a fine job. Kingswood would score only one more run in the third. Pomfret kept pecking away with a run in the third on singles by David St.Lawrence, Ray Zeek and Connor Quinn. Pomfret put on the pressure in the fifth as Chris Alves reached on a single. With two outs, Dan Gagnon headed to first on a single, to be followed by a walk delivered to Alec Harris. With three on, Will Hatch doubled to score all three Pomfret runners ahead of him. Hatch then stole third to move into scoring position. He came home on an errant pitch to give Pomfret a 6-4 lead that they would not relinquish.
Pomfret 12 Canterbury 4
The Griffins picked up their second win of the week April 28 with a convincing win versus Canterbury. Pomfret got on the board in the first inning as Dave St. Lawrence singled to lead off the inning and scored on a single by presidential hopeful, Ray Zeek. The Griffins kept the scoring barrage alive in the second with five runs on six hits from Will Hatch, Alec Harris, Chris Grandi, Tucker MacDonald, Dave St.Lawrence and Chris Alves. Five more tallies came in the third, which included a double by Zeek. Pomfret would score once again in the sixth, as Will Hatch, showing blinding speed on the base-paths, stole two bases and came home on a passed ball. Chris Alves picked up the victory with a fine performance on the mound. Alec Harris came on in the seventh to seal the deal.
Boys’ Lacrosse
Pomfret 5 Portsmouth 7
The boys’ varsity lacrosse team fell to Portsmouth Abbey, 7-5 April 28. In a game that featured strong defensive work and excellent goaltending at each end, Pomfret just couldn’t mount any runs on a competitive Abbey squad. The home team went up early, just 2 minutes into the game, but that was all the scoring for the quarter. Chris MacKay (3,1) struck first in the second quarter while Pomfret limited Abbey to few chances. They scored again at 4:28 and then found net with 20 seconds remaining on what would become a key goal for a 3-1 halftime lead. Rob Sassone (12 saves) made the initial save but the ball somehow jumped out of his stick into the net. The only true streak of the game came for Abbey as Pomfret came out flat to start the second half. Abbey scored twice in the first 2 minutes and found net twice more late in the third – the final tally coming with 30 seconds remaining. Pomfret did score twice as MacKay and AJ Bourdon (1,1) each connected.
Trailing 7-3, Pomfret held Abbey scoreless for the final 12 minutes of the game. Some of our best play of the day came in the final quarter as we tried to make a run, scoring twice and winning key groundballs. Unfortunately, we ran out of gas and the pesky Abbey defense came up big at crucial times; they were able to run out the clock.
Highlights on the defensive end included strong individual efforts from Jon Perekrests and Chris Emerson who both stripped the men consistently. Despite a significant difference in possession time, Pomfret outshot Abbey on the day including a 13-9 difference in the second half.
Girls’ Lacrosse
Pomfret 14 Lincoln 4
The Pomfret Griffins started the game uncertain of how it was going to play out April 27. While we were mentally and physically prepared, after a day of cold, rain, wind, losing phones, forgetting jerseys, and no goalie gloves, the Griffins were in good humor when they took the field. From the first whistle the Griffins not only fought for every ball, but they completely controlled the game. Nelle Herrick, Ashley Newhall and Dejda Collins were strong forces in defense, keeping the team grounded and controlled, and Amanda Scott returned to the goal today. Goals and assists came from 6 different players (goals and assists): Allie Bohan 1- 1; Caroline Brown 5; Dana Halsey 4 - 1; Brooke Bytalan 2; Ceci Hayssen 1; Kayla Sheehan 1.
Pomfret 9 St. Marks 19
The Griffins had another tough game April 28 at home. After being on a high from the previous day’s win against Lincoln, the girls came out hard and fought tooth and nail throughout the entire first half, keeping both play and the score tight. During the second half their energy and hunger for the ball continued, however, their draw control and decreased efficiency of winning ground balls put them back a step to the St. Marks’ offense. The defense showed their true colors during this game and proved to be an amazingly strong and dominating unit. Highlights: Defense: Ashley Newhall, Nelle Herrick, Dejda Collins all directed and controlled the defensive unit to maintain composure and strength during such a tough game. Midfield: Izzy Regine, Kayla Sheehan, and Andi Nicholson controlled the fight in the midfield, during transition and for 50/50 balls. Attack: Allie Bohan scored a hat trick for Pomfret while Caroline Brown and Kayla Sheehan each had two, and Dana Halsey and Ceci Hayssen each put in one. Allie Bohan, Caroline Brown, and Kayla Sheehan each added an assist for the Griffins as well.
