All Stars
take first
in 'pool' play
The Pomfret Eastford 11/12 All Star Team finished in first place in the Pool C opening round of the District 11 Little League All Stars. The lads from PELL finished 3-1 in pool play by defeating Norwich 7-2, Woodstock 13-3, Lebanon 12-5 and a loss to Putnam 11-1. This week the team hosted a rematch against Lebanon (after the Putnam Town Crier went to print) and the winner will continue on to play the winner of pool B July 14.
The clinching victory was a strong performance against Lebanon July 8. The visiting PELL team wasted no time by jumping out to a 7-0 lead in the top of the first. Throughout the game the Lebanon team kept rallying but the PELL team held them down while continuing to chip away. At one point in the game it looked like Lebanon would do some damage until a scorching line drive was caught by a diving Jack Archambault in what would have made ESPN’s web gems had the cameras been rolling. In the 5th Lebanon closed the gap to 9-5 but the PELL boys rallied themselves in the top of the 6th by adding three more runs to put the game out of reach.
Another strong pitching performance by Conor Hanlon (3-0) was backed up in relief with 2-1/2 solid innings by Daniel Whittenburg and closer Jack Archambault.
Accounting for the 12 Pomfret Eastford runs was a total team effort as no one player stood out on this night. Jack Archambault continued his red-hot hitting with another scorching single, Conor Hanlon put one off the fence, Dan Whittenburg and Nate DeLuca rapped doubles and Doug Gerrity cleaned the bases with a triple. Connor Bavosi also had a base clearing double up the line.
