POMFRET --- With one bridge replacement finished, the state is now turning its attention to the replacement of another Pomfret bridge.
The state recently finished replacing the bridge next to the Pomfret Town Hall on Rt. 44.
According to First Selectman Jim Rivers, the state will shortly begin replacing the bridge over Mashamoquet Brook at the junction of Rt. 97 and North Road.
Rivers said the roadway there will be reconstructed and the entire bridge will be replaced.
The project costs more than $2 million and is being paid for with state funding.
"No town funds are being used," he said.
During the last inspection, the bridge was found to be in need of repair.
It was not shut down, as the Covell road bridge was.
"It was just its time to be fixed," Rivers said.
The reconstruction of the Covell bridge should be finished by the end of 2010.
Rivers said that the Rt. 97/North Road bridge project should take one and one-half years. "It's a two-season project," he added.
The state plans to keep open one lane at a time, as it did on the Rt. 44 bridge project.
