The Congregational Church of Putnam, having raised almost $10,000 (the goal was $5,000), lowered its ailing 30-foot steeple Sept. 9. Scaffolding was installed around the steeple and rehabilitation of the steeple began this week. Pastor Tom Meyer said church officials do not know how long the steeple work will take. When the shingles are removed, officials can assess just what repairs are needed. The steeple fund-raiser is part of a two-year capital campaign to raise $75,000 to repair the church. The 1870 bell was also lowered to the lawn to the side of the downtown church and will be "spiffed" up. Pledges and donations are always welcome.
