Fall is the perfect season to celebrate the great outdoors in The Last Green Valley. The air is crisp and the leaves transform into brilliant autumnal colors. What better way to embrace the season than by getting out of the house? Partake in at least one of the more than 100 free guided hikes, walks, bikes and paddles during the month of October – Walktober. More than 25 special events are scheduled throughout the months of October and November, all throughout the 35 towns of The Last Green Valley in northeastern Connecticut and south central Massachusetts.
Select from among walks and paddles like: Willi and the Ghost Train Line in downtown Willimantic, and reminisce about the streets removed during redevelopment while learning about the Air Line and Ghost Train, so called because of it’s white color; or perhaps a 2-mile Sunset Foliage Paddle on the Quinebaug beginning in Holland, Mass.,, and traversing through scenic countryside along one of the most bucolic sections of the river; or how about one of the nine original Walktober Walks including a Walking Tour of Taftville, to celebrate the life and legacy of historian Rene Dugas in whose memory this year’s Walktober is dedicated. There is also a unique walk entitled: HealthQuest 2010 Fit, Fun & Fresh, which will motivate you to take proactive steps towards a more active lifestyle as you walk along the Quinebaug River in Putnam and enjoy a complimentary nutritious salad and beverage. History buffs will not want to miss Voluntown’s Civil War Soldiers in Voluntown, at the Robbins & Kennedy Cemeteries, and take an in-depth look into the personal histories of the 39 Civil War veterans buried there.
The multitude of special events featured during Walktober includes two different corn mazes in Sterling and Thompson the Brimfield Antique Auto Show in Brimfield, Mass., the Annual Fine Arts and Crafts Festival at Roseland Cottage in Woodstock, and the Willimantic Art and Co-Op Festival in Willimantic, featuring the works of a multitude of artists, musicians and theatrical performers.
There is still more. Also showcased during the months of October and November are the abundant farms found throughout The Last Green Valley where you can tag your Christmas tree, pick-your-own seasonal produce and select a farm-fresh turkey in time for the holidays.
