Pomfret 2 Williston 1
Sept. 29: It was about the rise of the Thompson Triplets (Matt Bourdeau two goals, Dave St Lawrence two assists, Kyle Lasewicz shutting down the vaunted Williston attack) or was it about the coming out party of a Canadian goalie (AJ Bourdon getting his first start of the year and rising to the occasion including a stunning stuff of a break away and forcing a penalty shot miss) or was it the sophomore tandem middies (Charlie Gruner and Tim Haggerty playing solid middle defense and offense) of the Ray Zeek motto (You live by Ray Zeek and you die by Ray Zeek—but you gotta have Zeek) or just a team seeking revenge (we lost to Williston 7-1 last year).
It was a remarkable win. Pomfret matched up well despite our short bench as we had Dan Paulmbo, Kevin Grace, Ted Driscoll and Jack Nicholson all on the inactive list and only three guys suited up—all of whom played significant minutes—including Chris Alves who sat out last game with a concussion. Williston took it to us early and were a well-trained squad who is favored for a play-off birth this year and returns many starters from last year’s play-off team. Pomfret matched up well in the back as Kyle was once again in command and Remy and Ray played off the charging withdrawn forward. Max King in the middle pushed up and marked out a WNEPSSA All-star for most of the game. Matt scored both of his goals from the position of marking back. Up front we had started the super sophs Chris Grandi and Tim Haggerty and before the day was done each would be playing two other positions as we tired and they stepped in to do whatever it took. Chris did an excellent job at the wing half while Tim
teamed up with Charlie Gruner to control the middle. Brian once again created turnover after turnover with his speed and hunger. Then when he tired we moved him up front to run some more. Mark Koslowski also worked in on that wing half as well giving us valuable resting minutes. Dave St. Lawrence continues to be the glue. Williston scored in the first half on a cross that AJ leaped and thought he tipped over the bar. He did not and they swept in on the rebound.Dave St. Lawrence got fed down low in the corner on a run from a ball from Chris Grandi and he fed to Matt who one timed a ripper in the lower right corner from just inside the 18—a beauty. Williston sagged. It was then that Chris Alves and Diego Briones did their best work. They stretched the field and took on the comers. Other than Kyle long balls we put about five balls in the air all second half.

Varsity Soccer
Sept. 30: Despite all the commotion of 19 cross country teams running past field # 1 during the 9th annual MPS Cross Country Invitational, the boys soccer squad battled throughout the first half but just missed many great scoring opportunities. The Golden knights finally jumped out to a 1-0 lead when junior midfielder Isauro Figueiredo threaded a beautiful pass to striker Ben Gustavson who smashed it into right hand upper corner of the net. The team appeared a little fatigued and sluggish despite the fact that they did not practice the day before due to a senior retreat and monsoon like weather. The team settled down in the second half and as Watkinson pushed forward Figueiredo and Samuel Elizondo both scored splendid goals from two accurate crosses by Gustavson. Trevor Ouellet earned player of the match from the opposing coach for his outstanding play in the midfield. He was ably assisted by Zachary Morin who unselfishly moved to left back with 15 minutes remaining when junior defender Hayden Yaworski suffered leg cramps. The defense, anchored by senior goalie Peter Boguszewski, recorded their third shutout in 5 matches. Greg Diaz was singled out by Watkinson coach Andy Rees (an old high school colleague of Coach G’s) for his outstanding defensive play. Colin aka “Kyle”’Duethorn also played two solid defensive halves. Eric Bordua continues to improve at stopper back and gives the team more offensive opportunities than it had at the beginning of the season. Sophomore Nick Borowski again played very well at left half as did juniors Rafal Lachcik and Kyle Higginbottom. The hard fought victory improved the team’s record to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in WNEPSSA.
Cross Country
Sept. 30: The Marianapolis Cross Country team hosted its first of two invitationals on Wednesday. With a new course and great running conditions, both the boys and girls teams were able to place in the top five teams at the finish. For the boys, Ryan Werge, Pat Daoust, and Eric Teixeira helped the team to finish 5th out of 15 teams. Sara Morrow placed in the top-10 finishers for the girls and led her team to a 3rd place finish among very tough SENE competition. Pomfret, Watkinson, Wheeler, and Providence Country Day were the top-placed teams, but overall, the Marianapolis teams overcame bouts of sickness and numerous runners on the injured reserve to improve team and personal finish times.
Hyde
Football
Hyde 7 Vermont Acad. 18
Sept 25: The Wolfpack opened their season at home vs. the Wildcats from Vermont Academy.
Vermont struck early as they scored on the first play of the game on a “bells and whistles” throw back pass. However, Hyde answered immediately on the ensuing drive and drove the ball down the field and scored their first touchdown of the season when senior QB Derek Kubitz ’11 ran in the sneak. Senior kicker Pat Donnellan ’11 added the extra point to put Hyde up 7-6.
Vermont scored once again before half-time and once again in the fourth to seal the victory. Hyde had its chances late in the game despite having lost Kubitz on the last play of the first half. Junior Bryant White ’12 stepped in valiantly at QB for the entire second half.
The Hyde defense played tremendously led by junior defensive end James Schnatterly ’12. James recorded two sacks and numerous tackles and led with infectious energy.
Player of the game went to post-graduate Justen Wilson ’11 who rushed for 90 plus yards and established himself as the clear leader of the Wolfpack squad.
