Varsity Basketball
Pomfret 69 Wilbraham 81
Dec. 16: The boys traveled to Loomis for the first round of the Loomis Tournament and played their best game of basketball of the young season. The opponent was a very strong Wilbraham team and the boys fought hard and kept it close. In fact with just over 4 minutes left, Dan Gagnon hit a 3-pointer off of a great pass from Nic Lane to tie the game up at 63. But Wilbraham proved to be strong down the stretch and hit all their free throws to pull away.
Andrew Robinson led the way with 21 points, followed by Kahari Beaufort with 16, Nic Lane with 14, Dan Gagnon with 10 and Danny Metzgar with 8.

Pomfret 1 Cushing 4
Dec. 17: The Griffins lost to the Penguins of Cushing in their second game of the Lawrence/Groton Holiday Tournament. Pomfret weathered a Cushing storm in the early going, with goalie Nick Ellis ’13 making several key saves, though the Penguins did take a 1 – 0 lead into the first intermission. The Griffins came out like gangbusters in the second period, and assistant captain Ray Zeek ’11 – in his typical hardworking fashion – knotted the game at one midway through the period. A Cushing goal a little more than two minutes later swung the momentum back in their favor, and two more Cushing goals in a one-minute span late in the second made the score 4 – 1. To Pomfret’s credit, the team rallied and played a gritty third period in which neither team scored a goal. Bright spots were the penalty-kill, which did a great job keeping Cushing off the board during their three powerplays, and the attacking speed of our forwards.
