Pauline M. Goulet,
mother of 2
PUTNAM — Pauline M. Goulet, 86, wife of the late Joseph A. Goulet, died Jan. 31, 2011. She was a resident at Westview Health Care Center.
Pauline was born Jan. 11, 1925, in Putnam, daughter of Armand and Marie (Girard) Chapdelaine. She graduated from Putnam High School in 1944. Pauline was a life long resident of Putnam and dedicated her life raising her two sons. She married Joseph Goulet, her high school sweetheart, on July 8, 1944. Joseph enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in San Diego Calif. After the war, Joe and Pauline resumed their lives in Putnam.
In the early 1950s, Pauline assisted Anita Young at the Putnam Nursery School on Grove Street for several years. The early to middle years of her married life were spent raising her two boys and working with her husband in the office doing billing and bookkeeping for their business Goulet’s Express. During this period, Pauline also stayed involved with Putnam’s youth by teaching CYO classes at St Mary’s Church. When she was in her early 50s, Pauline decided to get her real estate license through courses offered at the Community College. She also went on to obtain her brokerage license. Pauline practiced real estate with several local agencies and finally found her place at Pine Knoll. During these years, Goulet’s Express was sold and soon Joe teamed up with Pauline selling real estate.
She leaves two sons; Greg of Nashua, N.H., and Wayne of Melbourne, Fla., three grandchildren, Todd of Cambridge, Mass., Tracy Aubin of Vernon, and Tim of Las Vegas; two great-grandchildren, Hunter and Isabella of Las Vegas.
A Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary Church of the Visitation will be announced in the spring. Gilman Funeral Home, 104 Church St., Putnam.
Sophie Gunsalus,

PUTNAM — Sophie Z. Gunsalus, 90, of Church Street, died Feb. 3, 2011, at Matulaitis Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Kenneth Gunsalus. He died in 2004.
She was born Oct. 22, 1920, in Plainville, Penn., daughter of the late Antoni and Ketrin (Romanowska) Zinavage. She was an executive secretary at Belding Heminway in Putnam for over 42 years, retiring in 1984. She was past president of the BHC Employees Association, and was editor for 10 years of "The Belcortline” Company Newspaper. Sophie was a communicant of St. Mary Church of the Visitation, a 20-year membership in the National Secretaries Association and was charter president of the Windham County Chapter. She was named “Secretary of the Year” in 1972.
Sophie was a master cake decorator with a diploma from the Wilton School of Cake Decorating in Chicago, and the Seeger School of Advanced Decorating in Toledo, Ohio. She earned diplomas from the National School of Design in Chicago and Cybick School of Custom Tailoring in New York City. She ran cake decorating classes in her home for eight years.
Sophie and her husband were members of the Museum of Glass in Corning, N.Y., and attended seminars for 37 years on antique glass. In 1983 they received national recognition for expertise and knowledge on antique dolls and glass by National Auctioneers Association. She was a great collector of antique dolls and glass.
She leaves her grandchildren: Mark, Mary, Matthew, Christopher and great-grandchildren: Megan, Gregory, Grace, Christina, Elizabeth, John, her daughter-in-Law Laura Gunsalus. She was predeceased by her son Edward Gunsalus.

Paul A. Ellison,
Korean war vet
THOMPSON — Paul A. Ellison, 77, of Riverside Drive, Mechanicsville, died Feb. 1, 2011, in Day Kimball Hospital. He was the husband of Jane (Jewell) Ellison. Born in 1933 in Windham, he was the son of the late Edwin Ellison and Ruby (Wing) Ellison Dittrich.
Paul was a highly decorated and proud veteran of the Korean war from 1950 to 1953. He later worked at Pratt and Whitney as a welder, Anchor Glass as a bottle maker, and Woodstock Middle School as a custodian. He was a Free Mason of the Putnam Lodge #46 A.F & A.M. in South Woodstock, and a life member of the VFW Lodge #10088 in Quinebaug. He loved dancing, playing cards, bingo and going to the casino. He enjoyed making jigsaw puzzles and watching the birds. He was an expert tree cutter in his day and took pride in his yard full of flowers. He loved to sing and listen to the songs “Lazy Bones” and “You are My Sunshine.”
In addition to his wife Jane, he leaves his children, Eric Ellison (Monica) of Tolland, Erica (Ellison) Groh (Larry) of Wilsonville, Jean Morgan (Giles) of Scranton, Penn., Robin Ellison of Danielson, Kirk Kozlowski (Liz) of Norwalk, Calif., Tami Lombardi (Tom) of Bristol; grandchildren, Corey and Ali Groh, Benjamin Ellison, Kerri and Kyle Connors, Tommy Dumouchel, Deanna, Stephanie, and Thomas Kozlowski, and Nicholas and Chelsea Lombardi; brothers, Edwin Ellison (Alma) of Queensland Australia, James Ellison (Cindy) of Glastonbury; sister, Fsaaam of San Diego, Calif.; his cat Missy.
He was predeceased by his sisters, Ellen Crossen and Doris Durand.
The Graveside Service will be held at 11 a.m. March 14, at W. Thompson Cemetery on Rt. 12. Gilman Funeral Home, 104 Church St., Putnam.
Margarette Montpelier,

DAYVILLE — Margarette (Bolduc) Montpelier, 73, of High Street, died Feb. 3, 2011, in Pine Grove Health Center in Pascoag, R.I. She was the wife of Raymond J. Montpelier. Born in Chaplin, she was the daughter of the late Fredrick and Ellen (Clark) Bolduc.
Mrs. Montpelier worked at American Thread and then went on to work at Acme Cotton in Dayville before her retirement.
In addition to her husband, she leaves her daughters, Rayliene Jenison of Brooklyn, and Denise Jenison of Brooklyn; grandchildren, James Montpelier, Shannon Morris and Jessica Jenison. She was predeceased by her daughter, Deborah, (Montpelier) Harold in 1991.
A Funeral Gathering was Feb. 8 in the Gilman Funeral Home, 104 Church St., Putnam. Burial will take place later in St. Mary Cemetery.
Irene A. Salkiewicz,
enjoyed gardening
N. GROSVENORDALE — Irene (Popowicz) Salkiewicz, 81, of Brickyard Road, died Feb. 3, 2011, Day Kimball Hospital. She was the wife of Edward Salkiewicz. Born in 1929 in Worcester, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Katherine (Menko) Popowicz.
Mrs. Salkiewicz was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening and most of all, spending time with her family.
In addition to her husband, she leaves sons, Edward P. Salkiewicz of N. Grosvenordale, Joseph P. Salkiewicz of N. Grosvenordale, John Salkiewicz of N. Grosvenordale; daughter, Katherine A. Kimball of St. Albans, Maine; grandchildren, Nicholas E. Salkiewicz, Ethan E. Salkiewicz, Douglas Kimball, Audrey Kimball, and Alaina R. Salkiewicz. She was the last of her 10 siblings.
The Mass of Christian Burial was Feb. 7, in St. Joseph Church, N. Grosvenordale. Valade Funeral Home, 23 Main St., N. Grosvenordale.
Rita J. Payne,

BROOKLYN — Rita J. Payne, 90, of Brooklyn, died Feb. 1, 2011, at Matulaitis Nursing Home in Putnam. She was the wife of the late Frederick Payne. They were married March 7, 1946. He died Sept. 27 1977.
She was born Aug. 23, 1920, in Brooklyn, daughter of Joseph and Yvonne (Mercier) Briere. She was communicant of St. James Church in Danielson. Rita worked as a sales clerk at Fishers Big Wheel in Brooklyn for 17 years. She will be remembered for her great faith, her sense of humor, and most of all for her caring and loving ways.
She leaves her children: Jean (George) Lukin of Moosup, Frederick Payne (Cheryl) of Jacksonville, Fla., Robert Payne (Claire) of Danielson, Anne McHugh (Donald) of Spencer, Mass., John Payne (Carol) of Las Vegas, Christine Gauvin (Raymond) of Spencer; her sister Theresa Wisniewski of Cape Cod; her companion, Ernest Beausoleil of Dayville; 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two brothers Lucien and Maurice, two sisters Margaret and Cecile.

Lillian L. Bacon,

PUTNAM — Lillian (Sharples) Bacon, 66, of Bibeault Street, died Feb. 5, 2011, in UMass Memorial Hospital.
Born in 1944 in New York City, N.Y., she was the daughter of George Sharples and Lillian (Hasiotis) Sharples.
Ms. Bacon worked as a very dedicated special education teacher for the Thompson public school system.
Each and every one of the children she taught were very special to her.
She retired in 2006 and then continued to tutor students.
She was a member of the National Education Association, and the Connecticut Teachers Association.
In addition to her parents, she leaves a son, Ronald L. Bacon Jr. of Holden, Mass.; daughter, Colleen Gaffney of Southington; brother, Lloyd Sharples; grandchildren, Jaimie and Jillian Gaffney, Aimee Minckler, Alyssa and Kerri Dennis, Steven, Marc, Matthew, and Derrick Bacon; and her great-grandson Aiden Minckler.
She was predeceased by her son, Robert L. Dennis Jr.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Lillian’s family from 5 to 8 p.m. Feb. 10 in the Gilman Funeral Home, 104 Church St., Putnam.
Funeral Service will begin in the funeral home at 7.
