Pomfret 3 Canterbury 2
Jan. 29: Captain Danny Palumbo ’11 and defenseman-turned-forward Brian Hickey ’11 each had a goal and an assist as Pomfret beat Canterbury for the second time this season. The Griffins spotted the Saints a goal 4:04 into the first period, but Palumbo evened the score at 11:43 after motoring past a Canterbury defender and converting on a partial breakaway. Hickey put Pomfret up 2 – 1 in the second period when he burst through a seam in the Saints’ zone and banged home a pass from Palumbo. Billy Beirnes ’12 earned the second assist on Hickey’s goal. After some good cycling work by his linemates Evan Hoffman ’11 and Brendon Beliveau ’12, Teddy Driscoll ’11 scored the eventual game-winner while parked on the corner of the crease; Driscoll showed poise and soft hands moving the puck from his forehand to his backhand before “roofing it”. In the closing period, Pomfret played solid team defense – with the exception of one small series of mistakes that led to Canterbury’s second goal – and Canterbury was not able to score even with their goalie pulled in favor of an extra skater.
Keeper Nick Ellis ’13 was presented with the game puck for his performance in the pipes. One thing that makes Nick a great teammate is that he keeps an even keel no matter the situation. Try as we might, mistakes are inevitable in hockey, but Nick never gets upset and shows tremendous focus on just stopping the puck. Teammate-of-the-Day, however, was Hickey for his willingness to help the team by switching positions and by playing so well as a forward.

Varsity Basketball
Hyde 42 Cambridge 55
Feb. 4: The Hyde basketball team traveled  down to Massachusetts to play against the Cambridge School of Weston.  Going into the game the team  was optimistic about trying to snap a five-game losing streak. Both teams at the beginning of the game went back and forth exchanging the lead several times.  Hyde got into foul trouble early in the game, forcing some of the Hyde starters to sit throughout the first half. CSW slowly started gaining the edge in the first half, extending their lead to double digits going into halftime.  At halftime the score was Hyde 16, CSW 27.At the start of the second half Hyde came back, with three quick buckets to make the score reasonable again.  For a little while it looked as though Hyde would come back from the deficit and win the game, but CSW quickly extinguished that hope. Once again foul trouble hindered the Wolf Pack from taking the win, and the final score was Hyde 42, CSW 55. Some standouts for the Wolf Pack included Jahvaney Beckford, who stayed on the floor almost the entire game, playing with great determination, he finished the game with 17 points. Mike Cannon, despite sitting most of the first half, had a game total of 9 points.
