Teaching Americanism to about 100 Putnam Elementary School fifth graders through the American Legion’s School Award Medal program is Putnam American Legion Post’s Senior Vice Commander Don Reid. On each of six successful Fridays he is mentoring the young citizens on the six ideals - Courage, Honor, Leadership, Patriotism, Scholarship and Service - during special half hour assemblies. Faculty, by secret ballot, will select one boy and one girl who will be presented a medal and certificate during a final assembly. “Youth are often awarded for their scholastic achievements,” Reid pointed out, “ but The American Legion believes they should also be praised when they demonstrate strong qualities of character and good citizenship. That’s why, since 1926, the American Legion has recognized such students with its School Award Medal Program.” Three more sessions are scheduled from March 25 in Putnam Middle School auditorium at 1:00 p.m..
