PUTNAM --- Town officials are keeping an eye on the erosion problem at Simonzi Park while waiting for another round of state grant funding to fix the problem.
The town had used a Small Town Economic Assistant Program (STEAP) grant to purchase and install a canoe and kayak launching area and to have the erosion problem at the park studied and plans made for fixing that problem, according to Town Administrator Douglas M. Cutler.
"We are looking for other grants," Cutler said. Erosion along the Quinebaug River, running most of the length of Simonzi Park, will require a fix of a "pretty significant distance" of concrete rip rap installed.
"We are hoping that within the next five years, we might be able to find the funding to fix the erosion problem. It's a water quality issue," he said.
In the meantime, officials are keeping an eye on the erosion. It's being monitored to make sure it does not affect the park property and the River Trail pathway that passes nearby.
