PUTNAM — The Putnam Little League opened its 60th season April 16 with the annual parade and

ceremonies. Gordie Mauer, who has been involved with youth sports for over 30 years, threw out the

first pitch to get the season started.
Murphy Park looked as beautiful as ever for the day. John Foucault, Jimbo Crabtree and Glenn Carlson

(three guys who don’t have kids in Little League) led the group of volunteers who got the field ready

for the day.
The Pirates and the Red Sox took the field to begin the 2011 season with the Red Sox winning 5-4.
Both teams were looking to get a leg up in the in-town rivalry. The Pirates started Aiden Ciquera on

the mound and he worked the first two innings striking out two batters. Aiden also scored a run in

the first inning. Tyler LaCasse went 2-2 and had a great catch on a fly ball to left. Ethan Nicol

also pitched, striking out three batters and went 2-2 at the plate. Alex Morowski hit a towering shot

that fell inches short of being the first home run of the season.
The Red Sox countered with Jacob Brule on the mound who was injured in a collision at home plate.

Brule returned to the game to go 2-2 at the plate. Scott Davagian worked four innings of relief for

the win, 5-4. Conor Quinn hit a rocket into the outfield and doubled in a run. Tristan Vanscoy scored

3 runs and was a menace on the basepath stealing three 3 bases and moving up on every passed ball.
