PUTNAM --- Recognizing the increasing abuse and misuse of prescription drugs, the Putnam Police Department and Putnam Partnership to Reduce the Influence of Drugs for Everyone (P.R.I.D.E.) will participate in the second nationwide, “Prescription Drug Take-Back Day,” in cooperation with the Drug Enforcement Administration.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 30 representatives of the federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Putnam Police Department and P.R.I.D.E., will be collecting potentially dangerous, expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs for destruction, no questions asked, at the Riverview Farmers Market. “Last year Putnam was among the top five towns in the State that collected potentially dangerous, expired and unused and unwanted prescription drugs,” said Putnam Police Chief Rick Hayes. “Many people are unaware that prescriptions that sit in home medicine cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse particularly by teens,” he added.
Romeo Blackmar, coordinator of Putnam P.R.I.D.E., the local substance abuse prevention coalition, said smaller communities like Putnam are not immune to the growing issue of prescription medication abuse by teens as well as adults.
