PUTNAM — Campaign General Chairpersons of the proposed Regional Community YMCA, Dr. Garfield and Sylvia Danenhower of Pomfret, recently announced that Capital Campaign fund-raising efforts have surpassed the $1 million plateau.
“This is an exciting step in our Capital Campaign program.  Many individuals have been working diligently to see this project through to its end.  The commitment we’ve received so far has come from a variety of sources, demonstrating a broad spectrum of support,” said Dr. and Mrs. Danenhower. Total projected costs are $13 million, of which $2.5 million is being raised through the support of individuals, businesses and organizations.
Combined with a $3 million gift from the Newell D. Hale Foundation and a grant from the State of Connecticut of $3.745 million, the total toward the project is now more than 60 percent. It is expected that the YMCA of Greater Hartford will also provide support in the future.
“We’re pleased with the progress that’s being made in procuring the necessary support for the project,” said Lawrence Hale of the Hale Foundation.
The fund-raising efforts spearheaded by the Danenhowers and Campaign Vice Chairman Paul Kelly of Woodstock, have involved a number of other key people and a large number of volunteers.  Nancy Weiss of Pomfret is serving as the Major Gifts coordinator, Atty. Thomas A. Borner, chairman and CEO of Putnam Bank, is the Corporate and Financial Division chairman.  Dr. Marc Cerrone and his wife, Atty. Kate Cerrone of Pomfret, are the chairpersons of the Community portion of the Campaign.  Delpha Very of Thompson is coordinating the all-important Donor Relations segment of the campaign.
The Danenhowers also indicated that the support the campaign has received from Honorary Chairpersons, UConn men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun and his wife Pat has been tremendous.
