PUTNAM --- The Putnam Business Association's first First Friday was blessed with great weather and a successful "Art Attack" May 6.
Karen Osbrey, president of the association, said the idea for First Fridays came from a group of PBA members who wanted to come up with a way to "focus on the arts and culture in Putnam. We have so many great things already happening in Putnam ... great dining, arts galleries, two live theaters, museum, antiques, boutique shopping. How could we build on that? The idea was that Putnam was already a destination for antiques and dining. How could we enhance that experience," she said.
The "Art Attacks" began on the first First Friday with a performance by the Breakin' Thru II Dance Company. They appeared around 7 p.m. in front of crowds near 85 Main Street.
Osbrey said the Art Attacks grew out of a brainstorming session to incorporate public art into First Fridays and to do something that no one else in the area was doing.
The first First Friday included later hours for many businesses downtown, plus special events including gallery openings, special sales, giveaways and more. Osbrey said future First Fridays will include more events outside, as the weather gets even better.
