POMFRET — The Pomfret Youth Lacrosse Boys' Junior B Team traveled to Stafford May 16 and played their way to a 9-0 win. Stafford had a young but spirited team that did well to hang with the Pomfret group as well as they did. Pomfret would score four goals in the first quarter. Ryan Black would win the initial faceoff of the game and pass to an open Peyton Durand for the team’s first goal. Tucker Sheehan and Durand would then notch unassisted goals before Josh McFadden would end the period on a nice goal off another Black assist.
In the second quarter, four more goals were scored to give Pomfret an 8-0 half time lead. Durand would score unassisted to start the period and then Christian Santangini would tally the next two off assists from Mason Defocy and Josh McFadden. The final goal of the period belonged to Lex Bosio on a nice individual move to the net. Minding the goal for the first twenty minutes was Corbin Schneider before he handed off the duty to Josh McFadden in the second half. Though not seeing a lot of action, both goalies combined for the shutout, a rarity in the game of lacrosse.
The remainder of the game saw Pomfret move the ball well and work on team defense. Connor Quinn, Ryan Gravier, Carson Hadley, Josh Bernier, Zach Gagnon, Colin LeSage, Nick Alessandro, Isaiah Price, William Liscomb, and Cal Wilcox all saw plenty of action and contributed to the shutout. The lone goal of the half came in the third quarter when Sam Paul took a feed from Mason Defocy and buried a top corner shot.
In the second game of the week, Pomfret traveled to Ellington May 18 for what proved to be an old fashion barn-burner. Ellington would strike first early into the game, but Tucker Sheehan would knot it up 1-1 off a Max Paro feed. Ellington would come right back with another goal of its own, but Ryan Black would score an unassisted goal to tie it up 2-2 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, despite the good efforts of defensemen Ryan Gravier, Colin LeSage and Carson Hadley, Ellington would regain the lead after scoring two goals to start the period. Just before the first half whistle, though, Pomfret would get one back when Sam Paul would find the back of the net off a Peyton Durand assist. Goalie Corbin Schneider did a great job minding the Pomfret net in the first half. Down 3-4, he passed on the duty to Josh McFadden for the final 20 minutes of the game.
The third period saw the Pomfret defense step up its game. Lex Bosio, Cal Wilcox, Connor Quinn, Zach Gagnon, Josh Bernier, Christian Santangini, William Liscomb, and Mason Defocy all denied Ellington easy clears and played tough, in-zone defense. About half way through the period, Isaiah Price would pick up a loose ball at midfield, evade sliding Ellington defenders and even up the score on a perfectly placed bounce shot. The hard work of the Pomfret squad would continue to pay off in the fourth quarter when Tucker Sheehan would score a fast-break goal off a Peyton Durand sprint up field. This gave the team their first lead of the game at 5-4. With the clock ticking down, though, Ellington showed their resiliency and tied the contest. Though both teams had chances to end the game in regulation, it was only fitting that overtime would decide the game.
In the overtime, Pomfret would win the faceoff but wasn’t able to capitalize. Ellington would have their chance, but the Pomfret defense turned them away. It was the next trip down field when Ryan Black found Corbin Schneider (yes, first half goalie Corbin Schneider) alone on the left side of the cage. Corbin confidently let the ball fly to the low, left corner and sent the Pomfret squad home with a 6-5 victory! With the win, Pomfret’s record is now 8-3, and they will take on Tolland and Somers this week.
