PUTNAM — Members of the Putnam Rotaract Club will test their strength and endurance to help eastern Connecticut’s veterans.  Club members have agreed to participate in the Warrior Dash on June 9 and collect contributions to support the LaFlamme-Kusek American Legion Post #15’s “Home At Last” campaign.
The Warrior Dash is a 3.11-mile running race with 12 obstacles spread along the route.  Rotaract “Warriors” will work their way over climbing walls, under rope nets, through mud pits and a variety of other ditches, hurdles and other stumbling blocks.  “Rotaract is all about service above self.  By participating in the Warrior Dash, we honor the men and women who protect America,” says Bryan Smith.  “The contributions they’ve made to our county are incredible, and this is our way of saying ‘Thank you.’ We are honored to raise money for the women and men who sacrificed so much for us.”
The “Home At Last” campaign is restoring an existing building in Jewett City into 18 permanent supportive housing units for homeless veterans in eastern Connecticut.  In addition to residential units, veterans will have access to on-site case management, job training and vocational support, and a variety of referral services.  According to Michael Belmont, a volunteer with the campaign, the first veterans will move in this spring.
Rotaract is the young professional branch of the Putnam Rotary and is part of a global effort to promote peace and understanding at the community level. The Rotaract Club will meet again at 6:30 p.m. March 5  at the Courthouse Bar and Grille.  For more information on joining the Club, please call Kip Parker at 860-442-3572. .  If you would like to make a donation the Rotaract Warrior Dash Fund-raising efforts, please make check payable to Putnam Rotary Foundation and mail your check to: “Putnam Rotary Foundation” PO Box 604, Putnam CT 06260.  Write “Warrior Dash” in the memo area of the check.
