POMFRET CENTER —  JoAnn (LaTour) Mayo, 55, Grosvenor Road, died May 3, 2012, at home.  She was the wife of George G. Mayo Jr. Born in 1956 in Putnam, she was the daughter of the late Robert, Sr. and Lillian (Corey) LaTour.
Mrs. Mayo worked in housekeeping for Regency Heights, Danielson.
She leaves three sons, George G. Mayo III (Sara), Gordon G. Mayo, all of Pomfret and Eric J. Mayo of Putnam; two daughters, Tammy Bardier (Brian) of Putnam and Crystal L. Mayo and her fiancé Blain Kollbeck of Pomfret; a brother, Michael LaTour of Putnam; sister, Patricia Gould of Putnam; five grandchildren, Andrew and Alexandria Bardier, Sophie Mercer, Hayleigh and Brooke Mayo.
The Funeral was May 5 in Gilman Funeral Home, 104 Church St., Putnam, with burial in South Cemetery, Pomfret. Donations: To the family.

Charles S. Bowen Sr.,

EASTFORD — Graveside services and military honors for Charles S. Bowen Sr., 85, who died Feb. 29, 2012, will be at 2 p.m. May 12 at Grove Cemetery, Rt. 198, Eastford, followed by a reception.
He was the husband of Arlene (French) Bowen for more than 60 years. He was an Army veteran of WWII. He was a Charter Member of the Eastford Independent Fire Company, owned Charles S. Bowen Trucking, Inc. and Eastford Truck Sales, Inc., was a second selectman for the town and, with his mother, was instrumental in the development of the “Oliver D. Joseph A. Menard Jr.,

PUTNAM — Joseph A. Menard Jr., 64, died unexpectedly May 5, 2012, at home in Putnam. Husband of Linda (Bennett) Menard, they were married on Oct. 20, 1984, in Putnam.
He was born Sept. 21, 1947, son of the late Joseph and Estell (Pepin) Menard.
A lifelong resident of Putnam. Joe was a hard worker, working for L & M Transport of Williamsville. He enjoyed fishing.
He leaves his wife of 27 years, Linda; daughter, Cassie Menard of Putnam; step-son, George Corriveau (Melissa) of Brooklyn, Walter Hawkins (Christine) of Nashville; brother, Donald Menard of Webster; sister, Jo Anne Moriarty of St. Paul, Minn.; six grandchildren: Bonnie, Erin, Nicholas, Mikayla, Elizabeth, William; three great-grandchildren: Madison, Roswell, Kaylani. He was predeceased by step-daughters: Carol Courcy, Suezene Hawkins and a sister, Carol Menard.

Phillip Salvas Jr.,
Korean war vet
BALLOUVILLE — Phillip L. Salvas, Jr., 78, of Ballouville Road, died April 30, 2012, at UMass  Medical Center in Worcester, after an illness. He was the  husband of Karen (Menard) Salvas. They were married July 2, 1966.
 He was born Aug. 2, 1933, in Woodstock, son of the late Phillip L. and Isola (Vadnais) Salvas Sr. He made his home in Ballouville for 46 years, formerly of Woodstock and he spent his youth in W. Thompson.
He was a supervisor at Electric Boat for over 42 years, and also worked in the maintenance Department at Hale Manufacturing for 10 years.  He was a veteran of the Korean war serving with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Intrepid and the USS Valley Forge. He was a member of the Putnam VFW #1523, a member of the Honor Guard for many years and a member of the former American Legion in Ballouville.  He enjoyed gardening and caring for his yard.
He leaves his wife of 46 years, Karen, his sons: Steven Salvas of Danielson, Kenneth Lavallee of Danielson, Craig Salvas of Ballouville; siblings: Lorraine Turenne of Canandaigua, N.Y., Pauline Daly of Bemis Point, N.Y., Earnest Salvas of Danielson, Richard Salvas of Putnam, Connie Stevens of Putnam, Roger Salvas of Woodstock; grandchildren, Ashley, Renee, Cody, Hannah, Kenna; great grandsons, James and Jonathan. He was predeceased by two brothers, Leonard Salvas and Francis Salvas.

William A. Smolen,

PUTNAM — William A. Smolen, 75, of Woodstock Avenue West, died May 1, 2012, at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford. He was the husband of Dorothy (Carlage) Smolen, they were married on April 30, 1960.
William was born Dec. 18, 1936, in Webster, son of the late William J. and the late Frances (Dembinski) Smolen. 
William was a communicant of St. Mary Church of the Visitation in Putnam. He was a quality control inspector with the Far East division in the shoe industry. William served in the U.S. Navy.  
He leaves his wife Dorothy (Carlage) Smolen of Putnam; daughter Karen Smolen of Putnam; son Michael Smolen ( Barbara) of Jacksonville, Fla.; granddaughter Kayla Smolen of Jacksonville; brother in law Fred Carlage of Clermont, Fla.; nephew John Carlage of New Hampshire, and a niece Lauren Brown of Clermont.

Robert A. Farrar Jr.
N. GROSVENORDALE — Robert A. Farrar Jr., 69, died May 4, 2012, at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester.
Bob was born in Worcester, son of Marian V. (Alexander) and Robert A. Farrar Sr. He worked as a security guard. Bob was an avid Red Sox fan and also enjoyed fishing, hanging out at Elm Park.
He leaves a son, four daughters, and their mother, Robert A. Farrar III  (Shinae) of Southbridge,  Deborah J. LeBlanc (Michael) of Oxford, Mass., Karen E. Lamontagne (Mark) of Connecticut, Jennifer L. Farrar of Worcester, Bonnie Marie Vickers, and Susanne (Hutchinson) Farrar of N. Grosvenordale ;a sister Beverly A. Farrar of Worcester; nine grandchildren. A sister Carol Farrar died in 2003.
The Funeral was May 8 at Nordgren Memorial Chapel, Worcester, with entombment in St. John’s Cemetery & Mausoleum in Worcester. Donations: American Cancer Society 30 Speen St. Framingham MA 01701.

Ruth Bosworth,

BRADENTON, Fla. — Ruth S. Bosworth, 90, of Bradenton, formerly of Pomfret, died April 15, 2012, in Bradenton. She was born Sept. 10, 1921, in E. Killingly, the child of Frederick and Louise (Miller) Smith.
She was a graduate of Killingly High School, Class of 1938. She was the wife for 49 years of Kenneth Bosworth, who died in 1988. Together they operated a farm on Bosworth Road. In 1965 she established Bosworth Farms Dairy, a popular restaurant and in 1967, she opened Bosworth House, a gift shop with an Early American theme. She also worked for the U.S. Postal Service and the U.S. Census Bureau. She was an assistant to Congressman Horace Seely-Brown and was active in many of his campaigns. She was a member of Wolf Den Grange, Day Kimball Hospital Woman’s Board and the Pomfret Republican Town Committee. She was an accomplished and enthusiastic hostess, welcoming visitors to her Pomfret home. She was a positive person who never said a negative thing about others.
