NOW is the
time for
Quiet  Corner
Football Clinic
By Ron P. Coderre
Two local groups are combining their efforts to bring a football and cheerleading clinic to local boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 14.
From 1 to 3:30 p.m. June 3, Quiet Corner Football and NOW (Northeast Opportunities for Wellness), are working together in presenting a Football and Cheerleading Clinic.  The program, which is open to youngsters of all skill levels, is scheduled for The Bentley Athletic Complex in Woodstock.  The fee for the 2 ½ hour session is $10 per child or a maximum of $20 per family.  All registrants will receive a T-shirt as part of the entry fee.
“This will be the 2nd Clinic we are sponsoring.  We had 97 kids attend our first Clinic this past January at Tourtellotte, coming from all over and as far away as Southbridge to Willimantic.  We are expanding (this clinic) to include a cheerleading component,” said Ed Higgins, one of the organizers.
The Clinic will include basic skills training, drills, information about healthy nutrition and fitness, as well as fun games and competition.  The skills offerings will be aimed at offense and defense and an expanded light competitive flag football game to cap off the afternoon.  Trained fitness instructors and dietitians, sponsored by NOW, will staff fitness obstacle courses as well as offering nutrition and healthy eating sessions.
“We have a lot of great area coaches and people helping out.  The overall goal is to increase awareness of opportunities to participate in youth football (and cheerleading) throughout northeast Connecticut,” said Higgins.
Among the staff will be coaches from the WPTP football league, Henry Large and players from Pomfret School, new Woodstock Academy football coach Jesse Pimental is also expected to be on hand as well as George VanVangel.  The group has also invited Killingly High School coach Chad Neal and newly appointed Quinebaug Pride coach Joe Arsemelly.
In addition to Higgins the organizing committee includes Eric Quinn, Paula Foster, Mark Caswell, Mike Mercier, Dwayne Hoops and Tom Lajoie.  Others involved are Allan Rawson of NOW, Large of Pomfret School and Jessica Clinton of WPTP.
