Katherine W. Savage,

EASTFORD — Katherine Wickwire Savage, 86, of Eastford, former director of RSVP in Brooklyn, died of breast cancer June 17, 2012, at Pierce Baptist Nursing Home. She was the wife of John T. Savage. They were married Aug. 24, 1950, in Hanover, Ind.
She was born April 23, 1926, in New Britain, daughter of Grant T. and Ruth (Bacon) Wickwire. Katy attended Oberlin College for three years and graduated in 1948 from Hanover College. After graduating from Hanover, she worked for the YMCA in Cincinnati, as a program director.
Katy was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Woodstock where she sang in the choir and worked on the newsletter. She and her husband enjoyed traveling and attending Elder Hostels. Katy also edited and wrote for the Eastford Communicator for over a decade.
She leaves five children Virginia Beesley of Quinter, Kan., Carol Savage of Plymouth, Minn., Grant Savage of Birmingham, Ala., John H. Savage of Asbury Park, N.J., Robert Savage of New Canaan; 10 grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brother, Franklin Wickwire.

Doris E. Cady,

POMFRET — Doris E. Cady, 97, of Pomfret, died June 21, 2012, at Lanessa Extended Care in Webster. She was the wife of the late Arthur Cady. He died in 1979.
She was born Jan. 1, 1915, in W. Glocester, R.I., daughter of the late Everette and Roseanna (Monte) Cutler. Mrs. Cady worked as a postal clerk at the Pomfret Post Office for over 25 years. She was a long time communicant of Most Holy Trinity Church in Pomfret, and St. Monica Guild. She made her home in Pomfret most of her life, was active with the Pomfret Senior Citizens and enjoyed quilting and working in her gardens.
She leaves her children: Janet Kraemer (Frank) of Griswold; Peter Cady (Suzan) of Roseville, Calif.; grandchildren: Sean Donovan (Lisa), Timothy Donovan, Maria Galvez (Chris), Emily Cady; great-grandchildren: Hannah, Shannon, Tayler, Trinity, Uriah and Ezra; brother Raymond Cutler Sr. (Rita) of Pomfret. Robert R. Trudeau,

POMFRET CENTER — Robert R. Trudeau, 77, of Orchard Hill Road, died June 16, 2012, at home after a long, battle with cancer. He was the husband of the late Wanda (Stryczek) Trudeau.
Born in 1935 in Putnam, he was the son of the late Donat Trudeau and Dorothy (Chabot) Trudeau. Mr. Trudeau worked at Electric Boat in Groton as a pipe fitter for 23 years, retiring in 1998. He also worked for Rogers Corp., National Chromium, Hale Manufacturing, and American Optical.
Bob was a big fan of the UConn Huskies girls’ basketball team and enjoyed going to the games with his friend Ed Surdam any chance he could. He also enjoyed gardening, the beach, swimming, fishing with his son in-law Mickey, going for long walks with his dog while smoking his pipe and reading.
He leaves two daughters, Donna Wittenburg (Mickey) of Eastford and Cindy Surdam (Chris) of Pomfret Center; two sisters, Lorraine DeScisciolo of New York, and Anna Squillacote of Florida; two granddaughters, Ashley Whittenburg, and Christa Whittenburg, and one great-grandson Kaiden Lopez. He was predeceased by his sister Priscilla Trudeau, and his twin sister, Sr. Jeanne Trudeau D.H.S.

Raymond Jolicoeur,
Korean war vet
PUTNAM — Raymond “Pic” Jolicoeur, 81, of Putnam, died June 19, 2012, at Day Kimball Hospital. He was the husband of Victoria Shirley (Buschka) Jolicoeur. They were married Dec. 1, 1956, in Putnam.
He was born Sept. 30, 1930, in Putnam, son of the late Arthur and Delora (Marion) Jolicoeur. Pic worked as a foreman at Electric Boat for over 30 years, retiring in 1986. He was a veteran of the Korean war serving with the U.S. Marines. He was stationed in Italy and was an embassy guard.
In his youth he was an avid sports fan, playing softball and football. In the 1950s he played softball with the Putnam Hawks. Pic was a long time member of the Quinnatisset County Club and a member of the “7 AM Group”, an avid Yankee’s fan and golfer, a life member of the Putnam VFW post 1523, was a past commander.
He leaves, in addition to his wife Shirley, children Denise Tsanjoures (George) of E. Putnam, Ron Jolicoeur of Downers Grove, Ill.; daughter-in-law Judith Jolicoeur of Downers Grove; sisters Clair Sarette of Putnam, Jeanne Denome of Putnam, Muriel Denomme of Taftville; grandsons Chris Tsanjoures and Jackson Jolicoeur.

Jeanne Thompson Currier
PUTNAM — Jeanne Thompson Currier, 76, of Putnam died June 22, 2012, at Oakwood Rehab and Nursing Center in Webster. She was the wife of Cecil Currier Jr.
Jeanne was born Dec. 22, 1935, in Thompson, daughter of the late Alcide and Adrienne (Lussier) Demers.
She leaves her husband Cecil; daughter, Jean K. Thompson; two sons, Gerry Thompson, Mark Thompson; a step-son Cecil Currier III; a granddaughter and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her first husband Gerald F. Thompson and a son David Thompson.

Bella Sherlock,

HAMPTON, N.H. — Bella Marie Sherlock, 92, died June 19, 2012, at home.
She was born Mary Bella Marchesseault, Aug. 2, 1919, in N. Grosvenordale, daughter of the late Henry and Rose (Breault) Marchesseault. On Oct. 7, 1939, she married the late Norman Anthony Sherlock and lived her entire life in Putnam, until her move to Hampton in 2004 to be with her daughter.
Bella was an active community member serving the Visiting Nurses of Putnam, Putnam Women’s Club, Cub Scout and Girl Scout troops, volunteer for Day Kimball Hospital, and Census Taker for the state of Connecticut. For 25 years, she served as optometric assistant to the late Dr. Rene Desaulniers. In Hampton, she became an active member of the Catholic Women’s Club and grandmother to grade 3 at Sacred Heart School. Bella loved people, her family, and Scrabble at which she was unbeatable. She taught Arts and Crafts at camps for many years and was an expert at knitting, needlepoint, and cross Stitch.
She leaves three children, Mary Frances Bernard (Philip) of Danielson, Michael Paul Sherlock (Jan) of E. Hartland, Nancy Catherine Leavitt of Hampton; grandsons David Bernard of Agoura Hills, Calif., Michael Bernard of Danielson, Christopher Leavitt of Bennington, N.H., and Benjamin Leavitt of Danville, N.H.; great-grandchildren, Zachary and Erin Bernard of Danielson, Brianna and Jacob Leavitt of New Hampshire.

Joseph Bove Jr.,

DAYVILLE — Joseph Bove Jr., of Lake Alexander, Dayville, died June 16, 2012.
He was born Jan. 4, 1939, in Putnam, son of Joseph Bove and Rose (Henault) Bove.
He and his wife, Sandra (Page) Bove, recently celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary. Joe graduated Putnam High School in 1956 and attended the University of Hartford. His career as a design engineer took him to opportunities around the country, eventually returning to northeastern Connecticut where he devoted most of his time to substance abuse counseling. He was also owner and operator of Papa Joe’s Ice Cream Shop in Danielson. Joe served on the Killingly Town Council for two terms. He was a member of the Board of Directors of United Services and was active with NECASA. Joe was also a PER of the Putnam Elks and served as a Justice of the Peace in Killingly. Joe was a long time friend of Bill W.
In addition to his wife, he leaves three sons, Dennis Bove (Rose) of Pomfret; Daniel Bove (Elizabeth) of Woodstock, and Michael Bove (Jennifer) of Marlborough; seven grandchildren: Natasha, Michael, Andrew, Dominic, Ethan, Samantha and Jason; his mother-in-law Rita; cousin Keyren Cotter.

Victoria Elliott,

PUTNAM — Victoria E. Elliott, 88, formerly of Wilkinson Street, died June 17, 2012, at Day Kimball Hospital. She had lived at Regency Heights of Danielson the last eight years. She was born March, 1, 1924, in Putnam, the daughter of the late Nicholas and Flora (Ginalis) Leaska and was educated in the Putnam school system.
Victoria worked at the old Wellington Curtain Factory prior to her marriage to Raymond Elliott in November of 1950. After marrying Ray, she left the workforce to raise her children and care for her parents. She then worked in the cafeterias of the Putnam school system, retiring in 1987. She then volunteered in the community kitchen of northeast Connecticut.
Even though baptized Greek Orthodox, Victoria was a lifelong member of the Congregational Church of Putnam and it was the church that was such a big part of her life. Whether it was serving on a committee, organizing the annual church fair, taking part in fellowship or preparing for a church dinner Victoria was always one of the first to arrive and one of the last to leave. The church was also instrumental in cultivating her love of music as she was a member of both the junior and senior choirs during her tenure within the church.
She was much like a matriarch to her family and friends. She was the central figure that others revolved around, yet she was the one with great humility. She was a source of strength for nearly everyone, and even with her limitations and disabilities following her stroke she was still able to impart a certain level of comfort and relief to those that visited.
She leaves her son Bruce Elliott (Kathy Hill-Elliott) of Putnam; daughter Nancy Mitchell (Jon Mitchell) of Hebron; grandchildren Elliott and Zoe Mitchell. She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Raymond in 2008; sister Ora Pelkey; two brothers Mitchell and George Leaska.

Mary Kaczor,

DANIELSON — Mary Kaczor, 101, of Danielson, formerly of Rogers, died June 22, 2012, at the Pierce Memorial Baptist Home in Brooklyn. On July 4, 1932, she married John Kaczor. He died Sept. 14, 1996.
She was born Jan. 9, 1911, in E. Hampton, Mass., daughter of the late Frank and Catherine (Stryharz) Poprawa. She attended St. Mary’s School in Putnam, her family moved to Goodyear where she went to Goodyear School. Mary worked in the Goodyear Mills. She loved playing cards and enjoyed many crafts. She was an avid fan of UConn basketball. Mary was a member of the Quinebaug Valley Senior Citizens of Brooklyn, Williamsville Fire Engine Company Auxiliary of Rogers, a member of the Goodyear PTA and a member of the St. Ignatius Rosary Society of Rogers. She was a communicant of St. Ignatius Church in Rogers and St. Anne Church in Ballouville.
She leaves her daughter Dorothy Hebert of Rogers; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; twin great-great-grandsons. She was predeceased by her sons Carl Kaczor, John Kaczor and Edward Kaczor; sisters Stella Magnan; Anna Diani; brother Frank Poprawa.

Raymond LaPointe,

Raymond E. LaPointe, 76, died June 21, 2012, at UMass Memorial Medical Center, Worcester, after a brief illness.
Ray was born May 15, 1936, in Putnam, to Edward and Rose LaPointe. On June 14, 1958, he married his wife of 54 years, Gloria (Perry) LaPointe. He lived and raised his family in Danielson, and worked for the State of Connecticut as a construction specialist until retiring in the early 1990s.
Ray was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus, The Danielson Lodge of Elks, and was a past president of the Danielson Little League. Ray was also active in the early development of the Danielson Springtime Festival and various other community groups. He was devoted to helping others, had a beautiful singing voice and a quick wit. He loved golf.
In addition to his wife, he leaves a son Guy LaPointe of Plainfield; daughter Colleen Strandson of Brooklyn; granddaughters, Bianca LaPointe, Nicole Strandson and Danielle Strandson; daughter-in-law Monika LaPointe, son-in-law Dennis Strandson, brothers Edward LaPointe, Jr. of Putnam and Richard LaPointe of Danielson; sister Betty Ann Joyal.

Dorothea Dowell,

SOUTHBRIDGE — Dorothea A. “Aunt Dot” Dowell, 92, died June 18, 2012, at home. She was a resident of Quinebaug from 1984 until last fall when she moved in with family in Southbridge.
She was born in Rhode Island, the daughter of William A. Dowell Sr. and Dorothy E. Cutler and raised in Sugar Hill/Franconia, N.H. She graduated from Dow Academy Class of 1938 as valedictorian and received both her undergraduate and master’s degrees from the University of New Hampshire. She began her teaching career in Idaho in 1942 where she worked for 2 years. She then taught in Maine from 1944-1956 before taking a job with the Dependent School System of the Armed Forces, teaching junior high and high school English and history to American school children on bases all over the world. She taught in Morocco, Turkey, the Philippines, Japan, Italy, England and the Netherlands. She made many lifelong friends during her career and traveled extensively throughout the world. Upon her retirement in 1984, she moved to Quinebaug to be close to her family. Her greatest joy during this time was watching her great nieces Katelyn and Jenna grow up. She was babysitter extraordinaire to not only them but their two dogs, Isabelle and Spencer. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Dudley where she was involved with various activities over the years including the Ladies Benevolent Society, the church library and oversaw the bake table at many fairs. She also was involved in activities during early years at the Quinebaug Park where she lived.
She leaves two brothers, William A. Dowell Jr. (Marion) of Beverly Hills, Fla., and George H. Dowell (Beatrice) of Putnam; nieces, Patricia Merrill (Rich) of Southbridge with whom she lived, and their daughters, Katelyn and Jenna, Linda Dowell of Maine; Janet Richmond (John) of Woodstock and their daughters, Jillian, Julia and Joy; and nephew Mike and his wife Sandi of Texas and their daughter, Erin.
