PUTNAM --- After months of paperwork, the town's Industrial Park is one step closer to having a crematory.
Last week the town of Putnam sold a 2-acre piece of property in the Industrial Park for $53,000. The buyer is Bourret Woods LLC. The corporation lists as its member Robert R. Fournier Jr. He is the owner of  two local funeral homes, Gilman in Putnam and Valade in N. Grosvenordale. The sale had been approved by a town meeting last September.
Fournier said he hopes the 1,540-square foot crematory will be operation in six to eight months.
Delpha Very, the town's Economic and Community Development Director, said he has all his zoning permits and has met all the town's requirements. He is currently gathering other permits needed, she said. Very said Fournier "did his due diligence" with town officials and boards, bringing not only information, but conceptual drawings so town officials could better understand "how the process and the business has evolved over time." "It's a business people just don't understand," she said, and Fournier explained it very well.
Fournier said the nearest crematory is 26 miles away. With a local crematory, he said, "We can offer more complete services. A local service offers more peace of mind."
Very said any land sale is a "long and arduous" process.
The quit claim deed was filed June 27 in the Putnam Town Hall. The sale is for Lot 112-1, Highland Drive and the acreage totals 2.02, according to documents.
