The 10 & 11 year old Little League tournament have begun and this year Putnam and Pomfret/Eastford (PEP) have joined forces to better their chances in the tournament. Starting the season with Jewett City, a perennial contender, would be the perfect test for this young team.
June 28, the two teams met in Jewett City. PEP jumped out to an early lead on RBI singles by Ben Holden and Tyler Lacasse. Gabe Records was the starting pitcher and threw three strong innings. He was relieved by Luke Mathewson who held onto the lead for the win.
Luke also had two hits and scored a run. Jewett City loaded the bases in the final inning and scored 2 runs to make the score 9-8 with the tying run on third. Luke struck out the next three batters to stop the JC rally and preserve the one-run victory.
PEP hosted the Sprague/Franklin/Canterbury team July 2. A win would put them in the District finals for the first time.
