Last week, Matt Smith was crowned the 2012 Connecticut State Amateur Champion, walking away with a 7 and 6 win in the championship.  His victory prompted his home course, Quinnatisset Country Club to commission a congratulatory banner, which is suspended over the entrance to course.  An honor that was rightfully deserved.
This weekend was a different story, as Smith was unable to get through the field at the Quinnatisset Club Championship as he got caught in a three-way battle for the title.  Unfortunately for the State champ he succumbed by one stroke to veteran golfer Bill Poirier.
Poirier, the 2012 champion, finished the two-day 36-hole event with a 142 total, edging Smith his younger opponent who finished at 143.  Finishing just behind the leaders at 144 was former Woodstock Academy standout and a member of the Williams College golf team, Cody Semmelrock.
That trio was far and away above the remainder of the field as fourth-place finisher Jay Lachance was eight strokes behind Semmelrock at 152.  Greg Pike, E.J. Wholey and Guy Lahaie at 154 tied for the fifth spot.  They were followed by Rocky Bedard, Chris Markiewicz and Al Remekie who came in at 155.
The Senior Division champion was Armand Gaudette who won by three strokes over second-place finisher Paul Roy.  Gaudette carded a 155, while Roy came in at 158.  Tom Morway and Fran Baranski finished tied for third place at 161.  Roger Dionne with a score of 157 captured the Senior Second flight.
The women’s championship went to perennial champion Anne Kelly with a two-day total of 159.  Anne Cinami finished second.  The Ladies Net title went to Barbara Howe who edged out second place finisher Irene Dionne 145 to 146.
The Men’s First Flight winner was Dan Navarro at 161, two strokes better than runner-up Paul Matty at 163.  Joe Bachand with a score of 173 walked away with the Men’s Second Flight crown.
