Recently, 42 interns of the UCONN Master Gardener Program of Windham and Tolland Counties received their Master Gardener Certification at a ceremony at the Tolland Agricultural Center. Bonnie Burr, assistant dean of the UConn Cooperative Extension System, and Leslie Alexander, state coordinator for the UConn Master Gardener Program, congratulated the graduates for their achievements and thanked them for the more than 1,200 hours they contributed to gardening education projects in their communities.
The projects included renovating and maintaining public gardens, helping foster food security and good nutrition at various community vegetable gardens, teaching kids about gardening at the Channel 3 Kids Camp and at Peoples Harvest in Pomfret, developing programs to help people with physical disabilities garden, and staffing information booths at various farmer’s markets and town fairs in both counties. In addition to their involvement with outreach projects, the Class of 2012 contributed well-over 1200 hours at the Tolland and Windham Extension Centers researching and answering questions from the public about gardening problems.
A new class of Master Gardeners will be starting up in early January 2013. Classes will be offered at UConn Extension Centers: Brooklyn (Fri), Haddam (Tue), W. Hartford (Wed), Bethel (Thu), and at the Bartlett Arboretum (Mon). For more information and to get an application you can call the Windham Extension Center at 860-774-9600 (or any other UConn Extension Center) or visit the UConn Home & Garden Center’s website: www.ladybug.uconn.edu.
