POMFRET — This year’s grand marshall of the 11th Annual NECT Holiday Dazzle Light Parade is The Town of Pomfret.
Pomfret was incorporated in 1713 and is celebrating  300 years as a town.
Nora Johnson, retired long time Pomfret town clerk / treasurer,  will be the grand marshall leading off the parade in an antique car. She will be followed by several floats celebrating Pomfret.  The Abington and Pomfret libraries will have a joint float with story book characters such as Dr. Seuss, Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood and several more.  There will be a large Birthday Cake float to celebrate the town’s 300th birthday with a variety of birthday music and well-wishers; an antique car decorated by the Pomfret Democrats; and another surprise seasonal town float.
Beginning at 5 p.m., the parade route is 1.5 miles long starting on Grove Street in Putnam and ending at Owen Tarr Sports Complex.  Find a spot along the route to enjoy a uniquely Quiet Corner kick-off to the 2013 holiday season.  It’s fun, it’s interesting and it’s dazzling. Lights, camera, action! As Gary O. would say “Get Glowing!”
The Pomfret 300 schedule for December includes a month-long exhibit of the history of Pomfret’s Nativity Play at the Pomfret Public Library. Dec. 8 , the Performing Arts of Northeastern Connecticut’s presentation of “The Nutcracker” will be performed at Hyde School at 2 p.m.
In the evening of the same day, there will be the traditional Pomfret Holiday Tree lighting and caroling at 5 p.m. on the ‘Vanilla Bean Green’ followed by light refreshments at the Vanilla Bean. This event will be held in memory of Mary Patenaude who was a member of the Pomfret 300 Committee and a long time advocate and coordinator of the Pomfret Holiday Tree Lighting ceremony.
The calendar of events commemorating Pomfret 300 is available on line at pomfretct.org.  There are events planned throughout the year celebrating many different aspects of Pomfret’s history. An ice skating party, a quilt show, readings, lectures, art shows, concerts, a tea party and a Tercentennial Ball are scheduled with more events being added.  For more information, please contact First Selectman Maureen Nicholson at 860-974-0191 or Walter Hinchman at 860-928-3355.
