Putnam
By Krista Deary
Putnam  56   Plainfield  70
Though, the opponent was a Class M school with a record of 12-9, it didn’t stop Putnam from coming out to play Feb. 22. Putnam, ahead by 2 at the end of the first quarter, knew they were going to have their hands full with a great player like Suthod Young starting for the Panthers. Clipper coach Shawn Deary said, “At 6-foot, 3-inches, he can play big man down low or a shooting guard and sometimes even run point. He is just a very well rounded player.” Clipper’s Doug Henry came back after nursing a ankle injury for the last couple of games. “Doug promised me that he would have the kids ready to go even though, post season was out of reach, even if that meant putting the team on his back and carrying them himself,” said Deary.
The second quarter was pretty even with the score 27- 26 Putnam ahead by 1. “Suthod Young had 14 of the first half’s 26 points but we shut everyone else down and held them to only 12 other team points,” said Deary. The end of the third quarter brought a 45 - 44 Panther lead. Hopes were high for the Clippers as their defense was as intense as it has ever been. The fourth quarter brought a finish that was very disappointing to the Clippers. They ended the game 70 - 56.
Coach Deary said, “It wasn’t for a lack of effort. Plainfield had two kids show up in the fourth quarter that scored 18 points , when in the other three quarters combined they had only scored 4. They just started scoring. I couldn’t be more proud of the way my boys played. They never give up; they fight till the very last whistle in every game.”
Doug Henry finished with 27 points, 6 rebounds. John Abreu followed with 17 points. Suthod Young ended with 24 points followed by Dylan Yaworski with 13 points, and 5 for 5 from the line all in the fourth quarter.

Putnam 48   St. Bernard  67
This game was a snow make-up game for Putnam from the week before, away in St. Bernard’s gym. St. Bernard played, shooting well from the outside. Putnam trailed by 5 in the end of the first quarter with a score of 17 to 12. “The second quarter is where we lost it. When you’re going against 6-8 and 6-7 players, you have to box out in order to get rebounds. In failing to do so, they outscored us 11 points in the second quarter,” said Clipper coach Deary.
With a final score of 67 to 48 the Clippers would end their season 5- 15. Doug Henry scored 23 with John Abreu and Matt Daigneault trailing with 8 points each. Pete Sabourin scored 7. St. Bernard’s Jared Kobylock led with 18 points followed by Josh Bowyer’s 14 and Dylan Delacruz with 13.

Pomfret School
Pomfret 55 Wilbraham 77
The boys hosted the top team in Western New England Prep League Feb. 24 when they played Wilbraham and Monson. Wilbraham was loaded with talent and size, and they also shot pretty well and executed their offense. They jumped out to an early 14-point lead, but the Griffins did not quit, played hard but nonetheless trailed 43 – 22.
The second half Pomfret played much better on both sides of the ball, scoring 33 second-half points and only giving up 34 to Wilbraham. In their final home game, three Griffin seniors afforded themselves well in the second half as Cameron Bell scored 12 second half points, Leo Driscoll scored 8, and Mike Stickles scored 7.

Pomfret 53  Bancroft 70
Feb. 22 the boys played perhaps their worst game of the year as they were routed by Bancroft 70 - 53. Bancroft’s big man Dave Mack did most of the damage by scoring 13 points and pulling down 18 rebounds. He also had some nice passes to teammates when Pomfret decided to double down on him. Only bright spots were the passing of Mike Stickles (8 first half assists) and the rebounding of Dan Gagnon and Andrew Robinson.

Hyde
By Sean Kelly
Hyde 69   PCD  64
Although it took two overtimes, Hyde finished SENE play Feb. 26 with a dramatic double overtime win (69-64) against a spirited PCD squad on their senior night. Arguably the Wolf Pack’s best win of the season, finished their league play undefeated.
Down by 13 points midway through the second half, Hyde persevered and received help from numerous sources. Dion Richardson ‘10 (14 points, 9 assists, and 7 rebounds) and Mike Cannon ‘11 (19 points, 15 rebounds) led the second-half charge, however, their efforts were not outdone by Chris Velez ‘10 (14 points, 3 assists), Nas Ibrahim ‘12 (12 points), and the defensive prowess of Ewart Guinier ‘10 (6 rebounds, 3 steals).
With the win the Wolfpack solidified sole possession of first place in the SENE conference tournament, which gives them a bye for the first round of the playoffs. The next game will be at 3:30 p.m. March 6 against the winner over St. Thomas More and Falmouth.

Hyde  62   St. Thomas More  41
The Wolfpack connected on 17 of 32 field goals during a blistering first stanza Feb. 24 , while turning the ball over a mere 4 times enroute to 38-14 halftime lead. The balanced scoring of Ewart Guinier ‘10 (8 points), Jumah Sutton ‘11 (9 points), and Dion Richardson ‘10 (8 points) sparked the first-half effort.
Hyde, winners of three in a row, finished the contest with a 62-41 victory over St. Thomas More in the semi-final round of the SENE tournament. Key contributions for the evening were: Richardson (16 points, 6-11 FG, 4-6)
