PUTNAM — May 20 was Senior Might at Owen Tarr Field for the Putnam Softball Lady Clippers and they celebrated with a 5-4 win over archrival Ellis Tech.
Team seniors include. Amanda Irwin, Dawn Cerasiello and Stephanie Baumuller.
The Lady Clippers were led by sophomore Julie Therrien who went 3-4 at the plate. She drove in the winning run with a single to right center field driving in Megan Heaney with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. “What a game,” said coach Steve Smith. “We just couldn’t get the bats going tonight, but we found a way to get a victory in the end. It was at great way to end our regular season for our seniors,” he added.
Senior Stephanie Baumuller, who went 1-3 at the plate with a triple, also was the winning pitcher striking out 12 and walking five. “Steph did a great job keeping Ellis Tech off the bases and keeping us in the game. We earned this victory tonight,” Smith said.
Sophomore Kaylee Shippee went 2-2 with two doubles and freshman Caitlyn Verrette had a two-run single in the fourth inning.
Next up for the Lady Clippers will be Cheney Tech in the CSC tournament May 25, followed by the State Tournament which starts next week.
Putnam’s last trip to the State Tournament was back in 2004, Smith said.
