Oct. 25: The Lady Golden Knights traveled to Bancroft School and played spoiler to the Bulldogs at their homecoming. The first set started off strong for the Knights. Serving was the key as the home squad had a difficult time setting up an offense, and the score showed that MPS came to play. The first set ended 25-16 and was never in doubt. The home team started off strong in the second set, jumping out to a 6-1 lead, but then the serving of the Knights became the story again. The Knights rallied to score the next 6 points. A back and forth battle ensued in the second set with 4 different lead changes. MPS appeared to have ended the set with a 25-21 score, but were called for a net violation giving the point and the ball back to the home team. In the past the letdown may have gotten in the Knights’ heads, but calm and cool the girls decided that they would win the next point instead. That’s just what they did, taking the set 25-22.
In a repeat of the pitched battle from a week before, Bancroft stormed back in the 3rd set, determined not to go quietly on their home court. It was a hard fought battle in the 3rd, which saw Bancroft down the Knights 25-19 and force a 4th.  Both teams went on long runs, and neither team would let the ball hit the floor. The 4th set saw some incredible rallies, but none was better than the point on which MPS reached 20. Both teams sent the ball over no less than 5 times, and the point looked to be over on more than one occasion before Bancroft and MPS somehow rescued the ball from touching the floor. Finally, MPS delivered the kill, took back serve and a 20-18 lead. Momentum stayed with the Knights for the remainder of the set.
The Knights improve their record to 10-4 on the season.
Pomfret School
Field Hockey
Pomfret 0 Tabor 2
Oct. 26: The Pomfret varsity field hockey team lost a tough non-league game to the sea wolves at Tabor  by a score of 2-0. The game was fast paced and there was not a second to react, the players had to have a plan when they got to the ball. That worked well in the first half, as Pomfret had some opportunities and saved some Tabor chances with solid teamwork and head’s up play. Both teams took four shots in the half and each had a corner to keep it close. In the second half, Tabor came out a bit stronger and quicker to the ball that put Pomfret on their heels. Tabor’s 9 shots to our 1 is the reason they scored two second half goals to seal the victory as well as a 6-1 corner advantage. The midfield of Ellie Carver ’12, Lexi Dorman ’13, Karoline Lozier ’13, and Michelle Kortlandt ’12 did a great job moving the ball up the field to their forwards. Defenders Moira MacArthur ’12, Jordan Ginsburg’ 13, and Katrina Goddard ’12 worked hard all afternoon to support goalie Jordan Lipson ’13 in her first start of the season. The forwards had great passing throughout the game, but were unable to connect once they got in the circle with solid scoring chances.
The team’s record is 2-7-3 overall and 2-5-1 in WNEPSFHA.
Pomfret 4 Suffield 1
Oct. 19: The Pomfret varsity field hockey team played an outstanding game against Suffield Academy and came away with a convincing 4-1 victory on our home turf. The rain was steady during the entire game but that didn’t stop Pomfret as they dominated from the first whistle with 16 shots in the first half followed by 13 in the second. Pomfret connected on great passing throughout the game that opened up numerous scoring opportunities all day. Scoring was balanced with two goals in each half although the Suffield goalie did a great job making save after save. She finished with 22 on the day. Pomfret took 9 corners, 4 and 5 respectively, to keep the pressure on the opponents. First half goals were scored by Ellie Carver ’12 on an assist from Lindsay Barber ’13 then Lindsay Barber on an assist from Karoline Lozier ’13. In the second half Alex Gerew ’14 scored on a great centering pass from Allie Bohan ’12 and then Bridget Bohan ’14 with an assist from her sister, Allie, off a goalie clear. The Pomfret defense pressured early and never really gave Suffield a chance as their sure stick denied the Tigers the chance to catch any breaks. Heads up play by Moira MacArthur ’12, Lexi Dorman ’13, Jordan Ginsberg ’13, Katrina Goddard ’12, Michelle Kortlandt ’12, Ellie Carver’ 12, and Karoline Lozier provided the Pomfret team with opportunities all day.
