WEBSTER --- A southern New England landmark, Mohegan Bowl, is ready to redefine candlepin bowling, and then some. Ed and Kelli Kinsley purchased it from the Pelletier family at the end of last July. The landmark was originally built in 1958 by Wilfred Pelletier and his wife Irene. The Pelletiers owned it for more than 50 years.
In addition, the ice cream shop at the former Lic's next door, will be reopening May 1.
Kinsley said they have operated North Bowl Lanes in North Attleboro, Mass. for nearly five years.
They had moved from California and became interested in the bowling business when the real estate market collapsed in 2008, Kinsley said. He said his previous experience was as a real estate developer.
"I sincerely believe candlepin is coming back bigger and better than ever and Mohegan is proud to help lead the way." With the All Star Pub and the new arcade, he said, they hope to offer complete family entertainment.
Kinsley added the lanes were closed during August, opened to the leagues in September and to the general public in October. The game room and birthday party rooms opened around the first of November and the All Star Pub, in the former Lic's Restaurant, opened March 1.
"We like to think we bring a little southern California style to something (candlepin bowling) that is definitely a New England tradition," Kinsley added.
He said their 28-year-old son Steve manages the North Attleboro facility and son Christopher, 10, has the "primary responsibility" of testing all the arcade games.
