Pomfret 4   Berkshire 3
Varsity baseball picked up a big win April 17 David St. Lawrence took the mound for Pomfret and put in a fine performance. The first inning was a challenge, as two walks and a double from the number four batter for Berkshire put the Griffins behind by two quickly. Pomfret responded in the bottom of the first as St. Lawrence scored on an outfield error. Berkshire picked up their only other tally of the game in the second. Pomfret got out of some tough jams with catches from Alec Harris, Connor Quinn, and Ray Zeek in the outfield. Offensively, Chris Grandi scored in the second inning on a timely hit by Tucker MacDonald. Dan Gagnon scored in the third with two outs to tie the game. It all boiled down to the final inning as Dan Palumbo took first on a walk and Dave St. Lawrence put one to right, pushing Palumbo to third. With two outs, Ray Zeek stepped to the plate. The Berkshire pitcher delivered his first pitch intending to put Zeek on with an intentional walk. The ball sailed over the catcher’s head, and Palumbo scored to give the Griffins the win.
Pomfret 3 Williston 18
A tough day April 14 on the mound for the Pomfret pitching staff and some timely hitting by Williston kept the Griffins on their heels. Tony Campione’s double in the fourth was a bright spot for Pomfret’s offense, as well as Dan Gagnon’s three-hit performance.
Softball
Pomfret 10   Williston 6
Paced by Maura Hall’s grand slam, the Pomfret Varsity Softball team won its home opener 10-6 April 14 against Williston.
Maura’s slam capped the Griffins’ five-run outburst in the fifth inning, when Pomfret took advantage of the Williston pitcher’s temporary wild streak to load the bases on walks to Sarah Steinke, Jamie Leonoff, and Ashley Anctil. After Sam Slotnick walked to bring home one run with one out, Maura came through with the first home run of her Pomfret career. Those were the Griff’s final four runs of the game,  the winning margin.
Although Pomfret had jumped ahead with three runs in the first two innings, for the second game in a row they let our opponents back into the game with three unearned runs. After the series of errors, Pomfret tightened up its defense and made all the plays. The score was still tied 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth when Ashley Anctil led off with a single to left, and moved up on Maura Hall’s infield hit. After Tristyn Drake walked, Ashley and Maura both came around to score on successive past balls. That made it 5-3, and after Maura’s home run the next inning we were up 10-3. Williston got a bit closer in the sixth with three more runs, but Megan Gaudreau retired the side 1-2-3 in the seventh to wrap up the game.
This was a good game for the team, as Pomffret’s 11 hits were more than we had gotten in their first two games combined. Ashley and Maura had two apiece, as did Katie Peverada and Sam Humes. Sam Slotnick, Tristyn Drake, and Hallie O’Connor each had one.
Pomfret 7 Loomis 4
April 17 the varsity softball team defeated Class A powerhouse Loomis-Chaffee for the second year in a row.
Pomfret’s pitcher, Megan Gaudreau, was a star, turning in her best performance of the season. Gaudreau did not walk a batter all game, the first time in several years that a Pomfret pitcher has done that. She was supported by timely hitting, especially a two-out fifth inning single by Sarah Steinke that brought home two runs, and a two-run homer by Maura Hall an inning later. It was Maura’s second home run in the last two games.
Pomfret jumped out to an early lead when Ashley Anctil led off the first inning with a single to right. She advanced on a base hit by Maura Hall, and then scored on Katie Peverada’s single up the middle. Maura then came home on a passed ball for a 2-0 lead. The Griffins made it 3-0 in the third when Peverada singled again and advanced all the way around the bases on two wild pitches and another passed ball. After Loomis got a run back in the fourth, Sarah Steinke drove home Maura and Katie in the fifth with a clutch line single up the middle to make the score 5-1.
Loomis scored three times in the sixth on a home run and three successive base hits. Pomfret grabbed the momentum right back when Maura Hall blasted a two-run shot far over the left field wall, driving in Sam Slotnick ahead of her. In the top of the seventh, Loomis’s lead-off hitter singled up the middle, but the Pomfret defense then recorded three quick outs to shut the door.  Pomfret’s record is 3-1.
