Pomfret School
Varsity Hockey
The hockey is playoff bound, with the Piatelli/Simmons (Small School) Tournament semifinals March 2. Pomfret 5 Williston 5
Feb. 26: With goalie Nick Ellis ’13 pulled in favor of an extra attacker, Billy Beirnes ’12 notched his 16th goal of the season with 28 seconds remaining in regulation time to tie Williston at 5. Beirnes’ goal capped a seesaw third period in which each team scored three times; Beirnes and hard-rock captain Danny Palumbo ’11 had each scored for Pomfret in the first period, while Williston had one goal in the first period and one in the second. Palumbo’s second goal at the 9:25 mark of the third had given Pomfret a slim 3 – 2 lead, but Williston scored the next two goals to lead 4 – 3 with 3:42 to play. The situation did not look promising, especially after Pomfret was whistled for a slashing penalty with
3:28 to go, but Assistant Captain Ray Zeek ’11 scored a shorthanded goal with 3:06 remaining after some good work by Evan Hoffman ’11. Williston scored with 1:07 to go on the deflection of a long shot from the point, but again Pomfret rallied. The coaches called a timeout; as soon as Pomfret got the puck deep in the Williston zone after the face-off, Ellis charged off the ice and Palumbo charged on. The usual net-front chaos ensued, and somehow clutch goal-scorer Beirnes slipped one past the Williston keeper. Though Pomfret controlled the play and outshot Williston 6 – 3 in the resulting five-minute overtime, another goal could not be found.
Pomfret finished the regular season 13 – 11 – 2 overall, and 12 – 8 – 2 in New England play. For the second consecutive year, Pomfret will participate in the New England play-offs in the Piatelli/Simmons (small school) Tournament. Pomfret will attack Dexter – whom they beat 6 – 2 recently.
Varsity Basketball
Pomfret 69 Marianapolis 79
Feb. 22: Danny Metzgar hit a long three-pointer to put Pomfret up 5 - 0. For the next 5 minutes the Griffins played exceptionally well on both the offensive and defensive end and jumped out to a 23 - 11 lead. Marianapolis fought back behind some hot shooting and managed to take a one-point lead with 15 seconds left in the half; however, Pomfret played one of their best offensive possessions of the season that resulted in a 3-pointer just before the half to give them a two-point lead at the half.
The second half began with Marianapolis playing a controlled game and punished the Griffs on the glass. They took the lead and extended it to 12 points early in the half. Pomfret switched to a 1-3-1 defense and played solid team offense and cut their lead to six with about seven minutes to go. Eventually their size and talent proved to be too much.
Stats: Danny Metzgar - 14 Points (5-14, 0-0) 5 Assists, 4 Rebounds, 2 Steals, 1 Block and 0 Turnovers; Kahari Beaufort - 15 Points (3-11, 9-10) 6 Rebounds, 2 Steals, 2 Assists, and 3 Turnovers; Nic Lane - 16 Ponts (4-9, 6-8) 5 Assists, 3 Rebounds, and 2 Turnovers; Jack Nicholson - 0 Points (0-1, 0-0) 7 Rebounds (career high), 3 Assists, 1 Steal and 2 Turnovers; Danny Gagnon - 17 Points (7-13, 1-3) 2 Rebounds, 1 Assist, and 1 Turnover; Ben Sukonik - 5 Points (1-1, 3-3) 1 Rebound and 1 Turnover; JJ Ahmed - 2 Points (1-1, 0-1) 1 Rebound, 1 Block and 2 Turnovers.
Pomfret 79 Williston 55
Feb. 25: The boys took on another Class B foe as Williston came to Pomfret for a make-up game that had been snowed out earlier in the season.Pomfret moved the ball well and found open teammates and jumped out to a 16 - 2 lead. Defensively, Jack Nicholson led the charge as he forced Williston’s best player, Ryan Palumbo, into taking bad shots and essentially disrupted their offensive scheme. Williston made a run to take a one-point lead at 25 - 24. Pomfret managed to outscore them 16 - 7 down the stretch to take a 40 - 32 lead into the locker room. After the half Nic Lane came out and hit two big three-pointers to extend Pomfret’s lead, and more superb defense by Jack seemed to fluster the entire Williston offense. Dan Gagnon took over on Palumbo and also played well defensively, as the rest of our defense seemed to fall into place. Kahari Beaufort and Danny Metzgar were controlling the glass. Pomfret pushed our lead to 20 and was able to play every member of the team, and each of them contributed in multiple ways. Every member of the team scored at least 2 points, and all but one player grabbed at least one rebound. The defensive play of the game came late when Jeffrey Iyalekhue blocked an opponents shot all the way back to half court.
Stats: MVP Nic Lane - 24 Points (8-11, 4-6) 6 Rebounds, 5 Assists, 2 Steals, 1 Block and 5 Turnovers;  Kahari Beaufort - 21 Points (7-14, 7-10) 11 Rebounds, 3 Steals, 3 Assists, and 4 Turnovers; Danny Gagnon - 10 Points (3-10, 2-2) 4 Steals, 4 Rebounds, 3 Assists and 0 Turnovers; Danny Metzgar - 7 Points (3-10, 1-1) 11 Rebounds, 3 Steals, 2 Assists and 4 Turnovers; Jack Nicholson - 4 Points (2-4, 0-0) 6 Rebounds, 1 Assists and 2 Turnovers; Jeffrey Iyalekhue - 2 Points (0-0, 2-2) 2 Blocks and 1 Rebound and 0 Turnovers; Ian Crouse - 3 Points (1-3, 0-0) 1 Assist and 0 Turnovers; JJ Ahmed - 3 Points (0-2, 3-4) 1 Rebound, 1 Assist and 2 Turnovers; Malkese Edwards - 3 Points (1-2, 0-0) 2 Rebounds and 1 Turnover; Ben Sukonik - 2 Points (1-1, 0-0) 2 Rebounds and 2 Turnovers.
Pomfret 48 Cheshire 75
Feb. 26: Cheshire was the better team as they were taller, bigger, quicker, and shot a lot better as well. Pomfret started five seniors, JJ Ahmed, Nic Lane, Danny Metzgar, Andrew Robinson, and Ben Sukonik.Cheshire jumped out to a big lead early. Pomfret battled back and played great team basketball and cut Cheshire’s 14-point lead to just 1, leaving it 31 - 32 at the half. The second half did not start very well as Cheshire came out firing on all cylinders and we struggled mightily to run offense. They began the half on a 29 - 4 run and essentially put the game out of reach. We played them evenly the rest of the way but trading baskets at that point was futile.
Stats: Kahari Beaufort - 19 Points (6-11, 6-8) 13 Rebounds, 2 Assists, 1 Steal, and 5 Turnovers; Danny Gagnon - 13 Points (3-12, 4-4) 2 Rebounds, 1 Steal, and 1 Turnover; Ben Sukonik - 2 Points (1-2, 0-1) 3 Rebounds and 0 Turnovers; Danny Metzgar - 3 Points (1-8, 0-0) 4 Steals, 2 Rebounds, 1 Assist, 1 Block, and 4 Turnovers; Nic Lane - 7 Points (2-8, 3-4) 4 Rebounds, 2 Assists, and 5 Turnovers; Andrew Robinson - 0 Points (0-0, 0-0) and 0 Turnovers; JJ Ahmed - 0 Points (0-1, 0-0) and 0 Turnovers; Malkese Edwards - 0 Points (0-1, 0-0) 1 Rebound and 1 Turnovers; Ian Crouse - 0 Points (0-2, 0-0) and 0 Turnovers; Jeffrey Iyalekhue - 0 Points (0-0, 0-0) 1 Turnover; Jack Nicholson - 4 Points (2-6, 0-0) 2 Rebounds and 4 Turnovers.
