Robert D. Bates,
science teacher
BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. — Robert Duane “Bob” Bates, 80, of Bonita Springs, died Oct. 31, 2012. Formerly of Putnam, he had been a Bonita resident since 1995.
He was born Dec. 25, 1931, in Putnam, the son of Rose Blanche (Le Fleur) and George Francis Bates Sr.
Bob received his bachelor’s from Brown University in 1954 and his master’s degree in education from Eastern Connecticut State University in 1974. He was a science teacher, longtime coach, and respected mentor at Putnam Middle School for 30 years. He was a lifetime member of the Putnam Lodge of Elks #574, a member of Quinnatisset Country Club, and played softball at the Citrus Park “Field of Dreams” for 19 years.
He leaves his wife of 61 years, Ruth Thomas (Stilu) Bates; sons, Michael (Denise) Bates of Putnam, Marc “Skip” (Tori) Bates of Brooklyn and Alan (Janet) Bates of Putnam; brother, William (Evelyn) Bates of Thompson; seven grandchildren, Jody, Jason, Brittany, Ryan, Glenn, Alissa and Eric; eight great-grandchildren; his former daughter-in-law, Erica Bates.

Henry A. Fredette
BROOKLYN — Henry A. Fredette, 89, of Brooklyn died, Nov. 4, 2012, at Day Kimball Hospital.
He was born Sept. 1, 1923, in Attleboro, Mass., son of the late Mary (Thurber) Fredette.
He leaves a niece Heidi Dubuque of Seekonk, Mass.; a nephew Michael Bachand of Oregon and his friend and caregiver Ronald Manning of Brooklyn.  He was predeceased by his sister Norma Bachand.

Russell S. Cook,

BROOKLYN — Russell S. Cook, 90, of Salem Village, died Oct. 31, 2012, at Regency Heights of Danielson. He was the husband of the late Lucille Cook. She died in 2000.
He was born on May 8, 1922, in Maybrook, N.Y., son of the late George and Ella (Schoonmaker) Cook.
Russell was a nursery worker at Vicade’s Nursery in Canterbury; he was also a long time member of the Canterbury Lions Club.
He leaves a step-son Ronald Weinberg (Lori) of Berlin;  brother Frank Cook (Ann) of Hudson, N.Y.; four grandchildren Douglas, Mark, Garrett and Heather Weinberg and seven great-grandchildren.

Lucien Lafortune,
VFW member
PUTNAM — Lucien Lafortune, 66, of Walnut Street, died Nov. 1, 2012, at UMass University Campus.  He was the husband of Janet (Vaillant) Lafortune.  Born in 1946 in Putnam, he was the son of the late Leonidas and Alice (Lefebvre) Lafortune.
Mr. Lafortune was a state employee for Connecticut DMR for 20 years.  Lucien enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow up. He was a member of Albert J. Breault VFW Post 1523.
In addition to his wife, he leaves his sons, Marc Lafortune of Putnam, and Scott Lafortune of Putnam; two sisters; and two grandchildren Ashley and Allison.

Melanie Harwood,

DAYVILLE — Melanie R. “Renee” (Duhamel) Harwood, 47, of Pleasant View Drive, died Oct. 30, 2012, at Hartford Hospital.
She was born in Putnam and lived in Woodstock, Killingly and Dayville.  She was a U.S. Army veteran serving in the National Guard.  She was formerly employed at Fiber Optics Tech Company in Pomfret, working as an assembler.  She enjoyed camping, E-Bay and loved to garden.
She leaves her husband of 24 years, Wilfred P. Harwood of Dayville; a daughter, Meghan R. Harwood of Dayville; a brother, Eugene Duhamel of Shrewsbury; a sister, Geraldine Sterns of Scotland; six nieces, one nephew, one grand-niece and one grand-nephew; her parents, Edward and Lorraine (Destoler) Duhamel.
A Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Nov. 10 in St. Mary Church of the Visitation, Putnam. Visitation is one hour prior to the service in the church. Donations: Charity of the donor’s choice.  Shaw-Majercik Funeral Home, Webster.

DAYVILLE — Chith Souriyamath, 55, died Oct. 25, 2012, at home.
He was born in Savanket, Laos, and moved to the U.S. in 1975.  He was a welder, having worked at Fabrico in Oxford, Mass.
He leaves his wife, Vongmay Souriyamath; seven brothers, Keo Souriyamath of Plainfield, Kanhkong Souriyamath of San Diego, Chansamone Souriyamath of Putnam, Don Souriyamath of Southbridge, Khonesavanh Souriyamath of Dayville, Tong Sengtong of Whitinsville, Mass., and Souphone Souriyamath of Southbridge; two sisters, Boun Thammavargja of Danielson and La Sirivong of Danielson.

Robert Tindall
Navy vet
BROOKLYN — Robert Tindall, 72, died Oct. 26, 2012, at Regency Heights of Danielson.
Robert was born in North Carolina, and lived in Danielson for 45 years, before moving to Brooklyn eight years ago.  He was a retired truck driver, having worked many years at Commercial Transport.  He was a U.S. Navy veteran.
He leaves his long time friend, Henry A. Belanger of Danielson.
