Putnam Science Academy last week hosted its biggest Drills & Skills camp to date with kids from Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
PSA men’s basketball coach and camp director Tom Espinosa said: “The number of kids we had was just great to see. Many familiar faces and so many new ones this week. There were 75 boys and girls, ages 6-14, working out from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. “It was a really hot week, but the kids were warriors fighting through the heat and bringing it everyday”
The camp was broken into two divisions- the Big East for the younger group, the NBA for the older- with three teams in each.
The camp ended with Providence winning the Big East championship game by 3 points over UConn and the Nuggets winning the NBA championship game over the Bucks. Providence was coached by Sam Nosakhare and the Nuggets were coached by Adamu Jabal.
Award winners from the week include: Free throw champions, T.J. Espinosa (NBA), Riley Shaw and Carson Lehto (Big East); Elbow shooting champions, T.J. Espinosa (NBA), Jackson Crescimanno and Henry Orrell (Big East); Hot Shot champions, Caleb Sawyer (NBA), Bishop Arnold and Teagan Espinosa (Big East); 1-on-1 champions, T.J. Espinosa (NBA), Thomas Neal and Teagan Espinosa (Big East); Hustle Award, Jaxon Specyalski (NBA) Blake Arnold (Big East); Coaches Award, Brody Dexter (NBA) and Charlie Ellsworth (Big East); and Player of the week, T.J. Espinosa (NBA) and Thomas Neal (Big East).
The camp also featured two All star games with 20 kids participating in each game and a camper of the day on each team was also recognized — one who stood out with work ethic and having a positive attitude.
