Pomfret pg 9 5-5-11

POMFRET --- The Pomfret Youth Lacrosse Junior Team, consisting of players 10 and 11 years old, opened their season on April 27 with an away game vs. Vernon.  Although the team lost the hard-fought contest by the score of 3-8, it was the first time many players on the 21-man roster had ever played a lacrosse game.
Pomfret opened the game in good style, winning the face-off, controlling the ball and getting good looks at the net.  The midfield line of Peyton Durand, Tucker Sheehan and Nick Elessandro had numerous shots on net, but the ball either went wide or was saved by a strong Vernon goalie.  When Vernon was finally able to create a turnover, their rush down field resulted in a fast break goal that Pomfret goalie Josh McFadden had no chance on.  The rest of the first quarter was mostly in the Pomfret defensive end where Vernon was able to take a 4-0 lead.
In the second quarter, Pomfret was able to settle the ship and scored their first goal of the game.  Peyton Durand made the score 1-4 on a nice midfield sweep and shot that found the back of the net.  Midfielders Max Paro, Sam Paul and Mason Defocy played a great second quarter by dominating the face-offs, picking up ground-balls and giving Pomfret quality possession time.  Despite the good play, Vernon managed two more goals in the quarter and put together a 6-1 half time lead.
The second half was a very even half, with each team scoring one goal in each of the remaining two quarters.  William Liscomb, Isaiah Price, Corbin Schneider, Colin LeSage, and Chris Santangini all contributed to the up and down play of the game.  It was Lex Bosio who scored Pomfret’s second goal in the third quarter, and Tucker Sheehan lit the scoreboard with a goal of his own in the fourth.
Overall, the highlight of the game was the unselfish passing play that Pomfret stuck to from beginning to end.  Letting the ball do the work and getting everyone involved in the play is the style of lacrosse that should produce good results with more playing time and experience by the young squad.
In a game April 30, Pomfret hosted Tolland on Pomfret School’s new turf field.  The team made up for the previous game’s low scoring by notching 11 goals to Tolland’s 1.
Pomfret spread the scoring out with eight different players finding the back of the net: Tucker Sheehan, Mason Defocy and Carson Hadley each had two goals; Christian Santangini, Sam Paul, Nick Alessandro, Peyton Durand and Zach Gagnon had one goal each.  Josh McFadden once again minded the net for Pomfret and recorded five saves on the day.
Though not finding their names in the scoring column, Ryan Black, Josh Bernier, Ryan Gravier and Connor Quinn all played very good lacrosse and help Pomfret to their first victory of the season.
The team’s record is now 1-1.
